Where to find good rope?

First, the splice on the Yale website that was posted up here was not the Locking brummell. If not stitched, a small child could pull the tail right out, undoing the splice. This splice may be less secure than the locking brummell, but security comes at a price. The non-locking version of the brummell splice is stronger than the locking one. When really put to the test, the tail of the non-locking can adjust to the load so that ALL the strands share the load. In the locking brummell, the strands cannot settle in....funny things can happen.

But don't worry, I had a sling tested that had locking brummells on each side...I don't have the numbers right now, but it broke at like 92% of breaking strength.

Yes, rb-one, you have to adjust the splice when making adjustable slings out of high-modulus lines like plasma. A rule of thumb is to double what you'd bury with polyester. More bury is needed because the rope is slipperier...you need to compensate for the lack of friction.

I know Yalex can often be acquired from www.aerialequipment.com They are located in the chicago area. You can call them and ask what they have on hand.

I don't know of any written directions for a loopie. It is one of the easiest things to splice, however. I don't have time right now, but email me and I can explain it to you.

Roger,

If I'm not mistaken, the tubular webbing for cabling has Cordura blended in for abrasion resistance. Tubular nylon won't be as tough I don't think. That might be a penny wise pound foolish decision as they say in England.

I'm not sure what RB doesn't like about loopies aloft, I love 'em. Take a look at tenex ratings once and you will note the strength. If I remember correctly, tenex is stronger than stable braid when comparing diameters. Take a look some time.
I have heard from Norm Hall that Yalex wears better...that might be unnoticeable as I have head no problem w/ Tenex.
He did mention to use double end when making loopies as it holds better. Nick, have you noticed this also?
