Which chain is the best?

I like carlton, its a middle ground between stihl and oregon on edge holding, and ease of sharpening. I have a few stihl, and carlton, plus some oregon stuff here, and prefer the carlton over all of the stuff I have around.

My maglev/magnet driver chain is best, but the cost is a tad high for the casual users
here, @ $189 American, or $4,037 Canadian. Or did I get that backwards.

I get the difference mixed up with healthcare costs.

I also ordered a woodsman pro chain today from baileys. I have been using the Oregon chains only so far. I'm just curious since I didnt even know about all the diffrent bars out there.

They are all good (Oregon Stihl, Carlton) if they are kept sharp, properly tensionned and lubricated.

The Stihl seems to have harder material which keeps an edge longer which also requires a bit more work to file, Oregon is softer and easier to file but will lose its edge the fastest, Carlton is in between the 2 previous.

Isn't Bailey's Woodsman Pro chain made by Carlton? I think I read that in another thread here somewhere. ....or I might just be crazy. :dizzy:

Gary
yep, carlton makes the woodsman pro chain.

Carlton....

Time it against an Oregon, or Stihl chain. I have always found it to cut faster, and smoother in most cases.

It seems to me from reading this post and others that STIHL and CARLTON both produce excellent chains. I'm going to order a few STIHLS and a few CARLTONS. Thanks everyone for your input.

I too prefer STIHL chains. I would say Oregon is a close second. I sharpen all my chains by hand file only and I always thought carlton was soft. It just doesn't seem to last in comparison. As long as you keep your chain out of the dirt, you will get your moneys worth out of any of them. :)

I like both Stihl and Oregon. Any quality differences seems marginal to me, so it is usually availability and price that desides.

My favorites at the moment is Oregon 95VP in .325, and Stihl RSC in 3/8".

I pay about half the price for a Stihl RSC, compared to the Oregon 75LP.
Oregon chain in Jred colors usually cost a bit less than in Husky or Oregons own colors.

Other makes is too troublesome to get hold of to be worth trying.

I Used Stihl For A Long Time. Tryed Husky (OREGON) On Found It To Be Good

Has anyone used Sabre? I think they may be out of business. I bought a used long bar from a saw shop in Oregon and the guy threw in 2 loops of Sabre full skip. I've only run one tank with the chain but it seems to be cutting well.

I think Sabre is Oregon, but don't quote me on that. I bought a couple of loops off of Ebay for about $5.00 a loop. It's been good chain. It took me more than an hour yesterday to sharpen one after my youngest son had used it.

depends

.325 Stihl RS no question!

3/8 I take Carlton over Stihl due to chain weight and cost, chain weight makes a difference if your looking for fast cuts.

For milling its back to Stihl for the edge holding and durability.

Time to teach him to sharpen chains. :)
