Whoopie slings Vs. spliced eye

I need to replace all of my slings within the next few days. Going to get 2 spliced eye slings for my blocks and am wondering what to do about the sling for my PWIII. In the past I have used a hank of 5/8" rope with a bowline tied into the PW. Now I am either going to pick up a Whoopie, or a spliced eye sling. Which do you guys prefer? I have a 16' eye splice sling for my block and have only come close to using it all up at the base of trees a few times.

Most agree that loopie is far better than whoopie.

Now is the eye better than the adjustable slings? Depends how good your crew is with knots!

I have a 24' 5/8 eye sling I made up that I use for the porty. It is only used for the porty. If you are blocking a piece off that calls for a 24 footer it had better be bigger than a 5/8. I really don't like the whoopie or the loopies a whole lot. I made up loopie just for cableing that I use to attatch the come along. I guess it has to do with the rope. Tenex seems to snag to easy.

With the loopie you can use a samller dia cord, since you are basicly using a choker.

I've got several lengths of eye sling, now they mostly get used for redirects when the loopies are used up.

Nick, when will the weather be good enough to lthink about the rope project? You got any numbers yet for me to bring my cousin?

I like Tenex for my Fos7 PW ( A much nicer piece than a PWIII IMO)

I perfer an adjustable over a spliced eye any day. I like to just whip the -oopie around the piece, and take up the slack. But that is just me. On some trees that are too big for my whoopie, i use a spliced eye. I perfer tenex for my slings, as it is easy to splice in many configurations.

I think that you are on the right track.

Loopies are great and usually better than whoopies. However, in this situation (rigging a porta-wrap 3 at the base of a tree) I would go with either a whoopie or even better an eye sling.

The nice thing about the Porta-wrap 3 is that you can eliminate a connecting link by girth hitching the PW3 to your sling. If you are using an eye sling or a whoopie this is a no brainer but if you are using a loopie- and most importantly rigging it correctly (see your Sherrill catalogue)- it is definitely not as convenient.

Loopies are definitely better for hanging a block than whoopies due to strength and efficiency. Depending on the size of wood that you work with I would flip-flop the system and go with loopies up top and a whoopie or eye sling on the bottom.

Silverblue, that is this new FOS7? Looks pretty fricken cool, my new groundie is a certified welder and we were going over how to make our own PW's, Maybe we can incorporate this into a cool new design.

For what its worth, I just got the Byron Toss video and figured out how to splice out all this neat stuff. I dont think I will be making as many Sherrill orders for split tails, whoopie and loopie slings, eye slings, tess cords, so on and so forth. Sheesh with all that I didnt think that they would be selling that video and splicing kit.

Yup, the pipe is a little bigger than that.
