Hey all,
I'm located in Southestern VT and am looking for soemone close that might be willing to give me tips on saws, sawing and the like.

Thanks,
Travis

Thanks Macman.....I'm kinda looking for some hands on, someone I can go visit for specifics, you know. I really apreciate your offer.

Marky Mark lives in NJ but travels up your way for recreation, maybe you could get him to stop in?

Russ

Hey Russ,
I have spoken with Mark a while he did offer some advice but I was unable to meet him at that time. I'll try e-mailling him again to see when he'll be in the area again.

Hey Travis,

I live near Worcester Mass, probably about 50 or 60 miles from southeastern VT. What type of information do you need? If you have some wood to cut, I'd be glad to bring my saws over and spend a day cutting wood.

Bob

Hey Bob,
I'm just new to sawing....I don't really have a certain amount to cut but since I have a saw friends ask me to do some cleanup for them. What I know is what I ahve taught myself, wich may or may not be the proper method. I would like to learn proper methods, mostly for saftey sake.

If you're cutting up wood that's already on the ground, there's a great thread here called "Bucking questions for the pros" (or something close to that) describing the many solutions people here have come up with for safely cutting logs on the ground. Felling standing trees is a whole new issue. Then there's chainsaw maintenance and also personal protective equipment (PPE).

My recommendation for starting out is to get some PPE: a pair of chainsaw chaps and a helmet/faceshield/ear protector combination is a great way to start. The time it takes to put on your PPE is a good time to consider the serious nature of working with a chainsaw.

Other than that, whenever there's some wood to cut up your way or when I get some more down my way, we can make some arrangements.

Where in SE VT? I'm in Winchendon,Ma, about 35-40 minutes from Brattleboro as the truck wanders. I bet Netree would make a trip. He's easily distracted and a wannabe logger. ;) Husky372 is up in this neck of the woods as well. Where ya been david?? Maybe a mini-camp at my place and I'll let ya cut up 15 or 20 cords of firewood. :)

Thanks for the info...I'll look for that thread. Chaps are on my list to get while I'm out this weekend. Tips on bucking and felling are mostly what I'm looking for....I bet I'll find a lot in that thread.

Hey Mike,
I'm in Putney, just north of Brattleboro. I'd be happy to take some time to cut up some wood, learn some things from those of you who actually know what they are doing!!

Travis

Mike, count me in if you have a mini-camp. I'll help you cut up those 15-20 cords. It sounds way better than cutting cookies in my backyard by myself.

Hehe...I have a bunch of those laying around the yard...everyone new who comes to the house wonders what the hell they are.

tmacie,
how much info are you looking for? i instruct W.A.C.S.(Woods And Chainsaw Safety). it covers everything from safely entering the woods, saw proformance and tuning, equipment maintenance, safe cutting practice, felling, safety gear and so on. i do not leave anything out. of coarse different agencies would get different applications (ie:some fire departments would also get determining and cutting a fire line).
i do not give any instruction over the net. for quility education, everything i teach is hands on. if i feel you are not safe at something or you do not understand something, we will go over it over and over again untill you do understand. if you are still not safe i will let you know so you do not get hurt.
in my experiance i have heard things from students such as " i have been doing it that way for 10 years and only been cut 5 times". "i'm too strong to use the decompression valve".
just because someone has been lucky with a saw and not hurt or not hurt bad does not mean it is safe or applies to anyone else.
i have made many posts in the accident forum with information i collected from accident sites. i posted my findings so others may learn not to make the same mistakes. i am not about to post any thing on the web or write a book so someone can get hurt or dead. and than the chance of a law suit.
like i always say- get educated. marty
