Just a thought from another post. People don't have any idea that we are specialized professionals. I have felt ashamed being a climber. We in most peoples eyes are next to roofers in reputations. Family members sometimes put me down for being a climber and ask where is that going to get and that anyone can do what I do. How do we explain to people that we aren't just another climber? I was at a local saw shop a few weeks ago and some guy was in there buying eye bolts. I assume he was climber if not the owner. I was standing there with some zing it. He ask me if that climbing line. The guy was totally serious. I went to tell him what is was and how to use it with a throw ball ect. It was just amazing. Then I have a neighbor with a tree company and I have never talked to the guy and he never approached me. He has seen me out in the yard with all kinds of goodies and never asked what it was. You would thing he would be curious. I just don't understand.

So stop calling yourself a climber big J! We herby bestow upon you the title of Professional Arborist.

Now then, how ,many would like to poke Master B's annoying avatar right in the eye?

When your in a tree people stop and stare in awe. When on the ground just another ignorant ditch digger. That's how I feel percieved by strangers some days.

Some people are just content with the way things are and just don't see the need for change.

For others change doesn't happen fast enough and are on a quest for perfection that really doesn't exist, but are always trying to find it.

As for MB's eye, poke it out. It doesn't really bother me, I know he can do better. I think I know MB well enough to say he isn't going to change, now that we called it to his attention. Next thing you know we will have a poll about it.

I have noticed it is in how you say it. Forget the title. I know what you mean. I used to wish I could say I was a rodeo clown or tested odor eaters for Dr. Scholls.

I made a decision a while back that I was a professional and wouldn't hang my head around anyone. I found it is hard for others to respect what you do when you are ashamed to say it yourself. Say it loud, say it proud.

So some people don't get it? So what. Some people are just edjits.

We have challenges like anyother industry. Marketing challenges, figuring out a target group, branding your company, etc. Sales challenges - a lot of it is buying and selling manhours, or do you want to be less of a commodity and more of a value added product? Major issues with immigration law, tax law, etc....

This list could go on forever and these are the things we have to deal with on a daily basis.....in addition to safely climbing trees. - Ashamed to say what I do? It is more challenging than a lot of jobs - mentally, and physically.

Respect what you do and others will respect it too.

Avoid the tree guy BS I hear a lot here - dropping numbers. "I made XYZ$$ today..." I have noticed tree guys doing that in real life off this forum. Have some class - you know who you are. My best friend has an MBA and works for HP. I don't hear him saying what he makes or how he saved $12 million last year reducing obsolescence.

Have class, keep your head up high, and act like a professional - the world will treat you like one.

"OH! You cut trees!"

Well that is part of it.

On another note, I've heard guys complain about the lack of respect they get. But then the dress like garbage pickers on the job and drive trucks that look like they should be in some farmers field.

Accountants are bean counters, private security are "rent-a-cops". It's human nature to denegrate others.

I find that people who are board with what I find fascinating are the ones who just want to talk about their stock portfolios anyways.

I tell them I am collecting saw dust samples in my socks for further study under microscopic conditions of said beeltes and various fungus that seem to be overtaking the forest and that their trees could be next.:blob2:
