wild cherry all leaves turned brown at once

In central Ky area. Recently some of my wild cherry trees dropped their leaves. Other WC trees at the same location had all leaves turn brown.

We did have some cold weather prior but I don't think it was a hard freeze.

Trees have not started to bud out new leaves on may 4.

Could they be toast.
