I talked to a few of my NCO's they kinda dont know either sounds like a 50/50 chance I'll have to climb the trees with my shoe strings. No problem.

Good points by all.

Underwor what if i was to start kicking and benind down and hugging like and screaming "Head ache!" when I turn my gear in hopefull this will draw attention away from the bag checker.
Ill just tell them I'm a tree climber praticing on the ground.

customs

on the same trip as i mentioned above, we landed in montreal abd were picked up by my mates uncle... we got to the american border and had to fill out the greencard application form.

i worked through it speaking teh questions out loud, to the 'any contagious diseases' question i forced a cough and then proceded to say 'nope'.

i then noticed that the guard was unclipping his gun from its holster, no more funnies from then,

god americans have no sense of humour

i had a good trip though

I recall that about checking guns, like rifles, etc..

There is a difference between what is carried on, and what is in luggage.

Maybe a saw can go on if:

It's run dry in the carb
Drained and aired uncapped for a few days
Packed with caps off
Kept in a sealed bag to keep oil residue odor down.

Not sure. But the airport will answer all questions.

Here's another thought:

Isn't there a limit on what the airline will pay for your luggage if your stuff gets lost? And would it be enough to cover your losses?
I know if you ship stuff, you can insure it for what it's worth.

I never fly commercial, so I always wondered.

The rate airlines have to pay out on lost luggage is next to nothing. You would end up with maybe $50 back on $1000 worth of equipment. Make sure your household or business insurance policy has a clause that pays out for items "temporily removed from the premises". Could save a lot of grief. Or make sure all your valuables are in your carry on.

My car was broken into last october. they took about 6,000 worth of climbing/camping/camera equipment. Luckily it was covered by my renters insurance NOT auto insurance. I still haven't got the money yet, but I think it's close!

Sounds like your better off shipping it anyway.

I've always heard that your stuff and you arriving at the same place and time is a real crapshoot with commercial, anyways. Glad I've never rolled the dice!

Nope, it's gotta go freight.

Trust me on this one. I have contacted all the airlines, and cargo companies.

When security is at code orange, or yellow (what it was around xmas and New Years) All private parcels hazmat or not go ground. That is what several shippers told me....

Try a search on Google for...

"Smokey and the bandit"

Wouldn't that be a great name for a new company getting ready to compete with FedEx and UPS?

So what is it a Bell, Sikorsky or Soviet surplus Hind-D:laugh:

Still saving up for something THAT grand...

gotta stick to the Mosquito's.

I'm thinking of getting into ultralight one of these days.

I know I done have the coordination to fly rotary though.

How they say it, like rubbing your bnelly and patting your head while dancing a jig? :dizzy:

Save up for a sky crane to do the big removals ;)

I have never had a problem, flying both pre and post 9/11. I have only flown with checked gear, and never with a power saw. The security people do look pretty hard at my kit, but they have always been reasonable, so far. I suppose that the fact that I'm carrying a federal employee photo ID might be a help.

I have asked for some information on what sort of hoops our fire crews have to jump through to move their power saws when they are dispatched via commercial aircraft. When I get that I'll post.

Update
Trees went well climbed about 10 and the 30 that was left just took the skidder and 120 prentis loader to um..

I find that alot, small track timber cutters moving into yards.
Its a whole new ball game and they know it.

Not the first problem with my gear. I actually think I could have packed a chainsaw in and it would have passed.
Good deal I made about $1000 for climbing 3 or 4, 80 foot pines :)
