Are there any states like California or Florida that have started
requiring Vegetable Bar Oils? Legislation is usually what makes
people switch, otherwise we would still all be using gas with lead
in it. I live in a state that does not even have vehicle inspections,
so I know there may be a state that requires its use. Just
curious.

Russ, my comments were intended to spark a reaction, incite debate, get people pissed off, and mostly just to get everyone to think about this subject. We each must do our part, however small it may seem, to protect the environment. Twenty bucks a gallon is a lot of money, but I know people who spend more than that on bottled water. I went to the theater last night. I bought a cup of Sprite, half of which was ice cubes. Cost me two bucks plus a tip for the server. That's like forty bucks a gallon!!!!
Anyway, the point is, what IS the point? Oh, yeah. If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

As far as the quality of the bio oils, I have been using them exclusively for many years and have not seen any unusual wear on bars or chains. I estimate I use about 2 - 4 gallons a month.

Brett, you succeeded, you got me thinking about enviro oil!LOL That`s a good thing, my favorite saw shop does stock it, back in a corner of the display area, back by the rocked out saws that they have taken in trade from their loyal customers. I saw it there once and asked the price, and haven`t asked since. Got me aware though, even though I`m not ready to jump on the bandwagon. Thanks to You and Christian for the food for thought. I wanted to "draw you out" with my statement about sermonizing and being a hypocrite, to see if you would come back babbling and frothing at the mouth, or with a sensible reply. You have done yourself proud with your reaction Brett and your sensible conviction adds credibility, at least in my mind. May God be with all of you, and let`s think about the true meaning of tomorrow, Christmas. Russ Christensen

I find the whole enviro-oil thing amusing. Here I am cutting down some tree(s) that took 100+ years to grow. There are micro-enviroments and wildlife habitats on,in, and around it that are dependent on that tree/stand or whatever. Now does it really matter if I spayed a little bit of oil on the ground? Which is more of an environmental impact?

I'm not saying that we should be ruining the environment and I'm not saying that we should stop removing trees or logging. From my prespective the whole thing seems silly. Kind of like the whole emmissions deal.

HowdyGuys,
I had a nightmare last night,I dreamed there was a discussion going on hear about bar oils. I had to come and see for my self that this was just a dream and after our last one, i swore never to discuss this topic again. Now everyone knows that store bought bar oil is only oiled up bubblegum and has no practical reason to exist on this earth. And that motor oil of any brand or grade is much better. Hey Fish what ever happened to your buddy ole Darren anyway?

I never could correspond with him, he never e-mailed me and
never posted his e-mail address, and he dropped out as quickly
as he appeared. How's the bass fishing down there, you are
getting a little chill down there these past few days, ain't you?
Fish

Hello Fish,

Yes the weather has been pretty cool 20's at night and 40's for the day time. It is not the best weather for Bass Fishing here as you would have to wear clothes and that is so restricting lol. I have just finished a complete restoration on another 1947 Indian Chief Motorcycle, It is red and white i expect it to score 100 points at the show. I will send Lambert a PIC and let him post it.
Happy Holidays to everyone.

You all realize big Walt has been avoiding this thread. I know
for a fact he uses extra virgin olive oil with whole garlic cloves
and a red wine vinagrette, and thinks factory bar oil is a waste
of money, at least he did last year. He used to recommend
regular motor oil, but I won't speak for him, he is capable in that
dept. Common Walt! Let's hear it.
Let's hear your opinion of the vegetable oils as well.

Here's my toss of the hat:

Who said that regular motor oil was not enviromentally friendly in the amount broadcast by a chainsaw? Is oil not biodegradable? What happens in nature?

Of course bar and chain oil is cheaper than regular good quality motor oil. It's made from reject oil to begin with! (clear bar and chain oils are usually reject hydraulic oil plus an additive known as visa-tac.) Lubricating capability is rather poor by the 4-ball EP (extreem pressure) wear testing.

Vegie oil is about the same. The shorter hydrocarbons can not be expected to do the same lubrication function as regular motor oil.

In fact, you will find that Johnson's floor wax will do about as good a job as those bar and chain oils that are sold under the push "Enviromentally friendly" bar and chain oil. (I have recommended Johnsons floor wax for use on pond and deck saws with 3/4 pitch chain when cutting logs floating in rivers, quite successfully).

Fortunately, sawchain is wonderfully forgiving, at least up to a point. The leading manufacturer has now cut the alloy content of Chrome and Nickle in half, and no one has noticed. Who worries about a little poor oil!

Walt Galer

We have been using Stihl Bio Plus for years and it functions great down to at least 20 - 25C below. It is simply the best you can use and in addition you dont pollute.
PS Is Norway north enough?
sir

Dear Sir, It is pleasant to see someone posting from a different country. From what I understand Scandanavia is very similar in landform to the Great Lakes Region here in North America with the miriad of silver lakes and mixed forests dotted with towns and villages. I was taught how to use a chainsaw by Finlanders in British Columbia and will never forget that.
Please let us know what saws they are using there and the timber that you cut and any other saw and timber trivia that is sure to interest us all.

Hi
Scandinavia has a landscape with great variations from the taiga in Finland that you described to the fjordland of Norway where I Live. The Fjordland is more like British Columbia or the west coast of Alaska with deep fjords and high mountains, scenic but a difficult place to do logging.
Now I mainly work with line clearance, field clearance and arborist work, but I began as a logger. In norway we mainly cut abies and pinus, I don´t know the english names. We cut birch and other leaftrees for firewood.
There are three main labels of chainsaws, Husky, Stihl and Johnsered. We are at the moment eight persons working in our firm and are of course unable to find out which is the best. I prefer Husky 346XPG because of its great balance, reliability and performance, in the canopies I prefer Stihl 020 for the same reasons.
I´m new in this forum but I guess this has been discussed before.

Hi Fish, the vegetable oil works real nice. I find that canola oil mixed half and half with red vegetable dye is not only enviromental friendly, but it is also a hit with Eminem.
Keep on Rockin!

Too bad they (the Finns) did not instill in you the use of the jonsered/husky saws John:cool: Oh well, at least you learned about a sharp edge. Did I tell you I have become quite the round filer since we last talked about the subject....

PS. what the hell was that beetroot (blood red) bar oil you used in that walkerized? 385xp that deceased some time ago. I remember the pics of "the splatter in the snow" when you were breaking it in a long time ago. You should now that any responsible saw runner will not use ATF as bar oil as it does not have the multiviscous temperature range of proper KY dino bar oil.

Hi Otto, I was using beet juice mixed 50/50 with canola oil, just cause I am that type of a guy.
Anyway, I know you and Fish are good friends and we all get a kick out you two beating up on each other.
Fish is really a good sort, he asks for nothing and gives more than he takes, just as you do.
The Chainsaw Troublemaker.

Hey Otto, after corresponding with Fish recently, I realized he hadnt seen the picture I took of you two when you came here to Ontario to pay me a visit. So here it is.

:blob2: Nice picture John, very nice. May she rest in pieces. The bar oil mix is environmentally friendly thats for sure. I like to give Fisher a boot every chance I can and he always returns the favour LOL... He does need to stop drinking moonshine and graduate to ethyl alcohol though:p

PS. whats next? A catalytic muffler for the 088KD? or does it come standard with the 084JD?
