Hello all, I have a Vermeer BC600XL and in the fall and winter months water gets into the drum where the fly wheel is and freezes overnight, resulting in us having to spend 20 minutes every morning to free the wheel before we can start. We’ve tried to tarp it but it’s not a great solution. I was to drill a small hole or two into the bottom of the drum to work as a drain but it’d like to know if anyone has had a similar experience. Or has a reason I should drill the hole

how is it getting in?
It’s running in along a crack where the drum opens where you would change the knifes
I'd try my best to get some temporary sealant on that crack like silicone, something lightweight, to stop the water from getting in
It’s not possible to seal it, that hatch also needs to open if anything gets jammed in there
Why shouldn't a tarp work? I will on my Chipper.
The tarp does work, but the top of the chipper has some sharp edges on it and when the show sits on it over time It rips holes in it and then I’m back to square one

The 600 is a disk style chipper. What "drum" are you talking about? The enclosure around the disk?

yes, definately drill a hole in the bottom to drain and then keep it clear after you're done for the day.
I thought when you said drum like a 1000 or bigger drum chippers that the drum itself was cracked and water was getting in.
I can't see a hole in the bottom of the enclosure doing anything to impede performance.
A lot of the water probably lands on the chipper chute and then runs to it's base and into the disc housing.
I've notice on my Bandit 250XP that is the shoot is cranked down some then the water runs off of the end of the chute Vs running into the disc housing.
I'll have to check to see if my Bandit has a hole drilled that is plugged up as that sounds like a good solution.

Remove it and weld the crack shut. Sounds like a really easy job. If you were closer to me here in Michigan, I'd repair it for you, no charge.
