I'm thinking red oak SS. Pin oaks usually have a lot of branches starting just a couple of feet off the ground. At least the ones I have here.

We have a bunch of pin oaks that don’t start branching until 6-8 although a lot of the younger ones start really low. I think I’m wrong about this being pin oak, but their bark can look pretty similar.

Hard to tell in the pics. I know the pin oak stinks green. I'll try and get a pic of one I have down in my pasture. It's about the same size.

When I gave the picture a second look it looks like the sapwood is pretty white. Pin oak is a very light brown sapwood and darker brown heartwood in my experience. Someone correct me if I’m wrong there but it should be apparent what it is when it’s split.

Here's the pin oak in my pasture. Only a few other trees nearby. Lower branches start at about 5 feet +/-. My hand to give you the size of it. I'm leaning towards red oak in SS's original pic.20220413_140011.jpg20220413_140026.jpg

I am near 100% positive its not red oak. The size of the rings and pretty near everything about it , the bark on the trunk vs. the branches, wood color and smell often varies a bit from individual trees and locations due to soil and water conditions and other variables . Looks like pin oak. I have cut thousands of them. I would estimate about 20% of the wood I cut. If it isn't a pin oak, looks very much like 1 to me.I have trimmed some red oaks, the color of the wood I think was similar, but the rings I believe smaller.

Thanks for the replies . Dont get much young red or pin oak wood. Because I dont like felling healthy trees but these had to be.
Well I only take reds from blow down sites or sick trees. Amateur servant of the land here. I do a lot of tree work for the elderly and those who don't have means. Low or no prices for service. I take the wood and offer them wood to burn as a bonus.
