The main thing I don't like about wood pallets is the mess they make when they do rot. Bits of rotted wood & nails that usually end up where you really don't want them to be. Might be OK if you can dispose of them before they get to that point, but the nails usually need dealing with either way - unless you have a spot to burn them that doesn't matter about the old nails building up in. Our tires seem to be nail & screw magnets, every one of them...

Bonfire of the vanities for rotted pallets. That takes care of them. Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust.

Wood pallets I would get 1 to 2 years unless blocked up. I used plastic pallets 2 years ago but the pallets would bend and the wood would lean over. So now I will use the plastic on the ground and wood pallet on top. Also the plastic pallets are slippery when wet. I have an endless supply of plastic pallets and wood pallets.

Wood pallets can also be ankle busters. If the slats are too far apart, many times my foot has gotten caught trying to walk on them--not a pleasant event. I end up taking spare slats, ripping them down the center and nailing them in between to plug the gaps.

The REAL problem with pallets is, the NAILS they leave behind......sometimes they fall out when you are moving them!

NO thanks, I value my tires too much...

My wife, two sons (11 &12 yrs old) and I split and stacked just over 3 cords today. We tried the wood pallets on top of plastic ones as mmzullo recommended and it worked very good. We use a small tractor with a trailer to move the wood to and from the pallets. We don't have any issues with nails and flat tires because the wood pallets are only moved when they're replaced - usually every 2-3 years. The plastic and wood pallet combo may be a game changer for us....time will tell.

Wood Doctor is right about the wood pallets being ankle busters for sure.

I offer a simple solution. First, don't lay down pallets where you will be driving any vehicles. The average wood pallet has about 90 nails in it that rust out as the wood rots away. Second, if you ever move them, consider a $100 metal detector that can then easily save repairs on a $200 tire that will roll over the area.

I prefer the third option, because it's a LOT less work!

DON'T USE THEM!

On the other hand, wood splits lying on pallets dry faster than wood splits lying on the ground. Let the wood dry and the pallets rot first. Having said that, I'm out of here and dropping hundreds of splits on pallets. To each his own.
I use yet "another" option, I don't dry my splits on the ground, and I don't chase nails from rotting pallets!
