The utility company came by this winter and cleared the entire right of way of trees. They used to only keep 100 foot clear - but have now come in and cleared the entire 150 feet. They have probably cut down 200 trees on my property and a lot of that was locust and will make nice fence posts - but I do have a huge amount of firewood to store for the next 3-5 years.

I have some scraps of roofing and some lumber left over from building a house and garage and I can build a roof for little or no cost, and I have attached a photo of one that I just completed and have filled up with wood that is holding about 3.5 chords. I sprayed the ground with a termite preventative, then put left over roofing underlayment on the ground to keep the moisture from the ground out, then put down pressure treated wood and put old pallets on top of that. This shed is located just at the edge of the woods and is completely filled up as of last night.

Next I am going to build a 16' square roof in another location using the same system of vapor barrier and old pallets for a floor - however I believe I will put some metal fencing between the posts along the sides to keep the wood from spilling out when stacked.

I would like to put this new shed in the woods so that it is out of site and not out in plain view - as I don't expect it to be very attractive. The woods are large mature trees and it will get plenty of air flow as the branches are up high, but it will get little sunlight. Has anyone done this and can comment on the ability of the wood to dry without rotting.

Good idea.
We also have a windfall (no pun intended) and there is much more wood than we can possibly use in the next 3 years.
I was thinking about making something for storage in the bush since the lawn is full and there is limited space available to move the wood to after the snow quits flying.

I have to build a new woodshed this year and will also have to refurbish our simple storage rack for one more year of use and there will still be lots of wood to store after they are full.

Your structure looks sturdy and should keep the water off the wood.

I think you'll be good the way you've got it set up with the pallets on the ground. If you have any birch (didn't see any) split that due too the thick bark will hold moisture in and punk it from the inside. I'm always working on 2-3 years out. I only ever use the paper birch 2 yrs or less. Maple, yellow birch, oak etc.. holds a good long time.

We have similar woods and have also stacked between the trees, and just getting it off the ground does the best. Splitting at least in half helps alot with getting out the moisture without inviting rot.

With the roof and your ground prep, you should be good to go.
