I'm 25, I just bought my first house not too long ago and i own a tree service/firewood company - so it makes sense to burn as a source of heat. house i bought never had anything but direct vent gas furnaces (3 of 'em), there is no ducting run at all so outside firebox is out.

what i want is a small wood stove, nothing crazy or fancy - just solid built, looks decent and heats the house. house is about 1200sq ft by the way. so anyways, i called a local place to get a price on something...

stove designed to heat around 1500sqft, installed is $3200.00. I think that is completely outrageous. is that in fact a good price? and/or where can i go get one that is decently priced?

his list was 1600.00 for the stove

600.00 in chimney

and then approx. 1000.00 to install - everything included.

I've never done any of this research before so any help would be greatly appreciated. i can find stoves on the net all day, but for installation and stuff i can't find prices and such on the net.

if you know anybody close to toledo, ohio i'll give 'em a call

I bought my 20' stainless chimney for $600.00 wholesale. They are not tuff to install yourself. My kid and I did it in a couple hours.

I dont know if your looking for a wood furnace or free standing woodburner but some wood furnace manufacturers that come to mind are:

1 Brunco, not sure if they are still in business. But used ones are around.

2 Woodchuck

I am sure their are other also. Maybe others will chime in with more companys that offer them.

Nick,
Most of the dedicated stove shops are going to hammer you on the "installation". 3 years ago I was shopping for a Jotul too add onto the far end of my house (3 chimneys). The Hearth and Home shop an hour or so away from me had the stove but would NOT sell it too me without them doing the install! They wanted almost as much as I paid for the stove too do the install.
So, they forced me too cross the border into Canada (45 min away) and buy the stove there. Not only did I pay $190 less for the same stove, but the guy sold me the flue kit that I ran up the chimney and capped. With a friend I took us about 3-4 hours all told. Was sort of funny bringing it back over the border though. Nafta allowed me to not have to pay any duty on it at all, but the Border guys were not sure at first and had too look up some info and of course the requisite paperwork. The funny part was that the stove could have been packed with plutonium/coke/heroin, etc.. but all they cared about was whether or not I was gonna pay the sales tax/duty.

PS: Looks like you don't have that large an area too heat, so I'm assuming you'd have an indoor freestanding stove of which there are loads to choose from. Jotul, Lennox, Morso, and many others make fine stoves that will serve you well for many years.

Buy a bigger stove than you think you need. 1000 for the stove 600 for the chimney. Do the installation yourself. It's not hard.
