We have just completed a chipper training course, its apparently going to become law here, consists of a morning talking about leg and hand removals, some technical jargon, then a 20 minute assessment, followed by an I.D. card and a free T shirt and baseball cap, and all that for just £300.00 per person, on the course my crew attended there were 2 additional 5 man crews, lots of yawning and one guy actually woke himself up with his own snoring, much to the amusement of the other 14 guys and the 2 assessors............Do you guys have to do this? its fun ....honest..... :(

Are you joking at the 300 GBP per person??

Leg and hand removals from what-the blades-by then it is a bit late no??

My intro to this agreeably potentially lethal equipment was a videotape, which I am sure touched upon most of the topics you discussed.

It is the same here too, pretty soon you are going to need a course to breath at work. If I have to sit through another WHMIS course again I will scream(Workplace Hazardous Management Information System). I used to train people in this in the Army, and now I have to sit through somone else's session. No, there is nothing that needs to be refreshed. And a number of companies around here make you sit through them unpaid which is BS.

Jock,

It's already law, in effect. You have to be properly trained to operate anything (I think Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations covers that), and you'll need to be able to show that..I've been on the training, but wasn't assessed, because the trainer cannot assess any more, but the trainer seemed to think that the training alone would satisfy PUWER. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I can't afford to go through the assessment. I know one thing..they don't believe in making it easy for you to comply with the legislation. The requirements seem to be always just out of reach, whatever you do.
