Ok. I've gained some experience with what it takes to get older saws up and running. I've gotten some good deals and made some great contacts to deal with. Before this past summer I had a refurbished 39 cc home depot special mcculloch which I broke in no time. The most serious mod I considered to a saw was putting a rubber chicken key chain on where i broke the chinsy plastic choke lever...you get it right. So anyways. I was dealing with my local junk guy and was buying lathe and machine parts at the time to craft some imaginary mill which I hope to realise when I get all the skills together. He brings out a running David Bradley 360 which just looks fricken cool and I buy it for $25.. shortly after that I find the P85 at the dump which everyone here has heard enough about. In no time I find this site and am off and running looking the world over for parts. Long story short.. because its somewhat long.. I now have a Jonsereds 70(?..need to look at one more part to confirm if its that or a 66), the David Bradley 360, P85, Homelite Super 2 (older cast w/two triggers), Jonsereds 80, 111s, Mac 1-51.. a 3-10e(maybe in the morning if its still at the shop for $10).
So what I'm looking at now is this. If I can get ahead a bit and get a "new" saw. You know one thats legal on a job site and might make it easier for me to source the lumber that I can torment with the previously mentioned items in the privacy of my yard. I have a dealer that I can get a new dolmar 7900 for $600plus and a new solo 694 for $800 plus. I'm looking into jonsered as there is a group of repair shops and dealers right in my area (on my street). I haven't seen anything over 60ccs assembled at the jonsereds places so I'm not sure what they are stocking "in the back". Any ideas on comparable saws? I know of one shop that carrys stihl.. and theres a couple husky places.
Mainly looking to mill or prep large and/or unruly stock for further resawing and lathe work. Currently devising some powerhead attachments to help hold and guide the saw (like the GB mills but more involved) and have the work at a decent height to save my back.. aka Bill from Diablo or Will Malloff.

Still learning.. have gotten some good feedback here.. and had some good laughs as well. What do ya think?

If you have been playing about with old school and homeowner saws a Dolmar 7900 will just amaze you

It's comparable to the best that Stihl and Husky / JRed put out, and is a few $$ cheaper. Whats not to like :)

If you are comparing it to a top saw like a husky 372xp or a MS660, then it may be down to personal preferance, but compared to lesser saws it's a great machine.

Cheers

Ian

The Solo 694 is a Dolmar 9010 in disguise, not the saw that I would want......

I believe the 395xp and MS660 are both better saws.

as a 7900 owner i would say go for it, but i would make sure you have access to GOOD service and parts first. It seems like a husky dealer is easier to find than a dolmar one.

The 694 is a desent saw. I have one......but then at $550 (new) I couldn't pass it up. The 694 runs a lot better with the muffler opened up, will easily pull a 36" bar!!!

7900

I have tried to acquire the best saws from each of the brands. So far the 7900 is my favorite. Before that the 372xp was #1.

I never said that the specs was the gospel truth, but you have to start somewhere.
