A neighbour cut down this Japanese mountain cherry (I'm in Japan). I'm ready to do my first milling, so will do this just for the experience, but it looks like a whole lot of rot in the middle. The brown parts are not soft, though.

Would you mill it? Is it worth the gas and time? Is there anything useable in there?

Appreciate any comments.PXL_20250216_053634692.jpg

do it and learn from it at a minimum. Take your time and be safe.

I took the advice and tried it for the experience. It turned out to have rot in the middle but I made a shed load of mistakes so it was totally worth it. As you can see from the photo, very rough cuts.

A nearby farmer heard my saw and asked me to cut down her underperforming apple trees so I'll try milling them and see if I have better luck.1000000224.jpg

It almost has a spalted look which I think makes for pretty wood.
Small pieces like that are difficult to mill because they move so easily.

Thanks for the comments/advice. The log didn't move noticeably because of the high mc.

I got one nice piece of no rot which I'll find a use for as garden furniture.
