WOW! That stinks

Have you guys ever removed or worked in a Ginko Tree? I removed one today and its 98* and it smelled like i was working in a puke bucket all day i was gagging and thought i was gonna get sick.:bad_smelly:

Never done a Ginko but I have been on some smelly ones. Had to give an estimate on a compromised Hackberry today that stunk to high heaven. Second city condemned tree I've had to bid in two weeks. This one is on a vacant lot in a ####ty part of town right next to a shanty. Rotten to the core. I could smell the rot as soon as i got to within 10' of the tree. I'm a little afraid I might find a body in it... Definitely sure it will be infested with cock roaches. All city trees like that are.

Yep, Ginkos are by far the worst. Only removed a couple Ginkos but have never smelled another tree stink like them...

I think the funniest thing about them is that the seeds are a roasted delicacy. I am not sure who thought "I'll take this thing that smells like vomited-up dog poop, then roast it and I bet it will be yummy."

Yeah it don't sound very appetizing especially if you know how they smell before roasting them.

Common error, but the spelling of the tree species is ginkgo.

Tree of Heaven smell like soggy captain crunch. Red Oak and cottonwood also smell pretty bad.

Silk Oaks smell great! Too bad for the rashes they give. One of my part time guys was out for a month with it. I sent him to the clinic twice for shots.

Out here for the last 10 years or so, only male ginkgo(or visa versa?) grown from cuttings are used for city trees. I did some work on a old smelly city street ginkgo, and the home owner told me when it was seeding, old Chinese people would show up to collect the berry's in droves.

Yeah, they stink! Hate working on them, but like the tree. Apricot is the worst for me, I get to the point where I want to pick up a handful of sawdust and start eating it, they make me hungry, they smell so good!

I discovered a few years ago that the fruit were edible when someone came and raked up all the stinkin' fruit in a public area and took it away. Then I did my research...

Yep, they are edible. I harvested a bunch last year, squeezed all the rhinds off, then cooked 'em up and ate them. Maybe I didn't do it right, or perhaps it is just an ethnic preference. they are ok, but...I don't plan on doing it again.

Pecans, almonds, walnuts, peanuts, macadamia, filberts, hazelnuts; they are ALL better.


BTW: the chemical that stinks in Ginkgo fruit is Butyric acid. Essentially, it it the organic acid made from Butane. It is a common and simple compound that just stinks to high hell. I used to have a big jug of it that I used to play pranks on folks with. Harmless, but stinky.

Hard to top the smell of a piss popple on a hot day. Especialy when you get the ones along a swamp that are almost more water then wood.
