Just got a Homelite XP-1020 last nite in the mail. Very good condition. After checking everything over installing new NGK plug, and pouring in 32:1 gas, I proceeded to start her. Main hi speed jet is out about 3/4 of a turn. Lo speed was about same. Saw fired after about five pulls. Only problem is it wonlt stay idling unless choke is out all the way. So I adjusted out the lo speed jet. Finally after about having it a total of 2-1/2 to 3 turn out it will idle. Now, the next thing is that when you give it gas, it almost dies out. IF you feather it slowly it won't . At full throttle it sounds like it should. So, I know that the lo speed shouldn't be out 3 turns. WHat could the possible problem or problems be. I thought either a possible crack in the fuel line, or the carbeurator has problems. Has a HL222A I think. Could you please help, or give suggestions as to what could be wrong. ALso the saw starts just fine, and seems to have good spark. OR should I check the points? Please help, by posting a thread here, IM me or email at: [email protected]. Thank you for all your help, and to everyone a good weekend; God BLess! smcowboy

On that saw the Hi and Lo have to work together even at low RPM's. At least mine does. Mange's sugestion is around where I started and ended with the hi Speed at 1 1/8 and the low at 1 3/4. I also had to do Three things to mine ..
1) Carb kit as the needle would stick and shut off fuel. Very frustrating. Never saw that before.
2) Split & clean the fuel tank. There was actually an old melted fuel line/filter stuck at the bottom. The corrosion wasn't bad but was finding its way to start clogging the fuel filter at the tank end of the fuel pickup line.
3) Replace the fuel line AND fittings from tank to carb. The fitting at the tank in particular was partially clogged from light corrosion.

None of that stuff was particulalry difficult to do. I had to re-tap the tank screw holes and use new screws...so I put allen head ones instead of the phillips head screws.

Saw runs well now. Pulls a 30 inch solid tip bar.

None of the old Homelites I have brought back to life have needed crank case seals yet.

My biggest problem with my XP-1020 is finding a source of clutch parts. I want to change down to a 3/8 chain and can't find a hub.

lets look at the simplest thing first, plugged fuel filter, which on an older saw, is VERY possible. if the fuel line is good, which I would be doubting myself, and replacing just to be safe, unless it showed signs of having been replaced recently, I'd go ahead and do it, plus the filter, and maybe rebuild the carb if it needs it after that.

If it still didnt idle right after that, Id be thinking its got some other issues.

Thanks for the suggestions, weimdog and lawn masters. Weimdog, my chainsaw buddy ordered me a new clutch hub for my 1020 with a rim drive, so you can use 3/8" or .404. I'll get the part number on it, and post it here for you! It's either ORegon or a GB clutch drum! ok take care!

I took your suggestions, and blew out the fuel filter, and checked the fuel line. Seemed good, so I adjusted the carb settings like weimedog said. The saw now runs good, and I didn't even do all that much! Thanks for making what I thought was gonna be a big job small! BY THE Way that clutch sprocket with rim drive part no. is : H0108-LN. IT's EITHER GB OR A OREGON. If I find out which I'll let you know!
