At last, after an AlGore  soft and wet early winter.the ground is hard and driveable, just a couple of inches of snow, with temps in the -F or F singles range here in Downeast Paradise. (Eat your heart our Msr. Saw Troll) Got most of next winter's wood==5-6 cords and the butts :bang: ready for the stack and split dance, and the routine T.S.I. stuff out of the way. Some 4' pulp along with that.
Now for some replacement chains. My dealer offers the RMC3 to replace the RS chains I've been using.
Anyone with serious RMC3 chain time ? I'm not too excited about "green" chain, but since I need to cut either close to the ground or "dirty":biggrinbounce2: wood, the RS chains need sharpening too often. Most of the cutting is with an MS260, down to a 18" bar at last count.
Advice? Other chains ?

Why not just go with an RM chain? Skip the safety stuff.

Looks like your just a couple of inches o the ground is going to chaige wednesday.....calling for 8-12 in down east according to the local stations here.

I can barely tell a difference in cutting speed from the 26RS (haven't used the new RSC we just got in) to the 26RMC3, as for the regular 26RM, good luck trying to find any of it. It's pretty much on perma-backorder from our distributor. It's as if they don't carry any in the warehouse and only order it when an individual dealer wants some loops.

I'd rather stick with the RS chain that I've used all along...sharpening often for the speed of the thing. Also: I fell anything over 12" DBH by boring and wedges. The RS chisels when sharp bore easy.
So---how about that RMC3 chain ? No "bumpers" to slow it down. I need users to tell the story, good or evil. Do we go back to chisel RS ?

BTW: we need some snow. It's poor man's sh$$ :D . It smooths out the stumps and bumps in the woods as long as it isn't like those poor slobs are getting in Buffalo. Too much.
Give a VALENTINETO YOUR SWEETIE.

If you like RS, then just use RSC... basically the same thing.

I find RSC3 (safety) cuts pretty much the same as RS... Can't get RMC3 in 3/8 yet, so no experience with that, but I do use 3/8 RM and RM skip a lot, and like it.

i've never tried RM skip, didn't even know it was available?!?

l purchased a couple of loops of 33RM, (3/8 - .050 RM), today. Had to pay $24/loop, and that was called a discount price. Sounded like too much to me, but I was there and needed to use them this pm, so I did it. Should this chain be so expensive?

It's about right...

we're close to stihl list price on the smaller chains but on anything more than 72 DL we've had to knock those down a bit . It kinda drives me nuts that stihl chain is all done by the drive link and not the length of the chain. I wish they'd make a 26RS81 and a 33RS72 the same price so i don't have to go and fool with the price file every time we get a new parts price update.

Official Stihl Use Spec for RMC3

Hot off the offical Stihl tech support line...I had to call. :bang: The RMC3 is NOT, repeat, NOT for bore or plunge cuts. It is a "safety/anti kick back chain. It will not do boring. SO, back to what has worked: RS or RSC, maybe even RMc . Whew, I'm confused.:taped: :taped: :taped:

That fits my theory about the rakers and the ramps on RMC3/RSC3 chains beeing too large, compared to the Oregon originals - those work very good for bore cutting (better than RS, RM and LG), because neither the rakers nor the ramps interfere with the cutters at the tip.......

Stihl copied the general design, but not close enough.......:jester: :ices_rofl:

Witch Chain for Boring ?

OK OK. So: witch :greenchainsaw: exactly (Oregon or Stihl model # please ) chain does ST or Andy or ??? recommend for boring/plunge cutting ? RS has worked for me with the usual caveats for boring/ plunge cuts. Rough at first starting under the tip, then smooths out in the bore. Always with a sharp chain. Often have to bore from both sides if the DBH is more than the bar........ I like the durability of the Stihl chains in varied cutting. They seem (seem) to stay sharper, longer.
All together now: "I'm a lumberjack, and I'm OK........"

The RS/RSC and Oregon LG is OK, but Oregon LP is better for that application.

Stihl RSK is probably the very best (narrow rakers, and no ramps) - but as a non-pro, I see no reason to go trough the hazzle of getting hold of it........

Oregon 95VP work very good for borecutting on smaller saws.

Rsk

I have about 5 or 6 stihl RSK chains. They are okay, but they take a wide kerf. Nice to sharpen:clap:, but they don't perform as well as RSC brand new. But as the cutter gets filed back just a little bit it starts to take a narrower kerf and cuts fast then. I don't have a problem with it, and will run it, but it does take a wider kerf. It bores really nice though like RSC. It does have the narrow rakers, surprisingly it doesn't vibrate bad. Stihl says it is for bars over 20" for better chip flow.
