I acquired an 031 av about a year or so ago and it had not been running at the time. I ordered a new carb kit and it took some tweaking to get it up and running ok.
See what it took to get it running better:

Here is what the 031 AV started as. The overall condition wasn't too bad but there was much that could be improved upon.

Once I got it running I decided to do some work to the exhaust and intake side of things.

Intake

There isn't too much that can be done with the intake as per a few forums that I read but I figured that I'd clean it up a little and open it up some.

Now this is my first attempt at working the exhaust to try to improve flow.

Now, I did get it back together and running. It runs pretty well I'd have to say. Minor gains in power but for what the saw is, I'd have to say it will be a pretty reliable backup saw or another saw to use when we are cutting up large trees.
I will get a finished picture once I am done. I still have a few things left to do such as handlebar wrap and maybe lower the squish on the cylinder by machining the base down to increase compressor. I will also post up some video as I get a chance.

My first chainsaw experience was with a 031AV that was my Dad's. Cut a LOT of firewood with that one. Later traded up to the 045AV Super I still have.

Dont forget to do the muffler :) I havent messed with that series of saws much so IDK if there is room for improvement or not.

The 031... is a LEGEND. They are so much more saw than what meets the eye.

Porting? Ask Jacob J. about one of his old buds (may be on here) that raced them in the 3 cube class back in the day. 19k rpm's... on alky.

How much do you think you gained I have an 031 and I was just wondering.:confused2:

I'll post a video tomorrow of it running in some wood. It's hard to say because I am only getting 100-110 on compression (I think my tester might leak because I lose psi real quick). Overall I think it worked out real well for a good back up.

I did have to add more fuel from stock about 1/4 of a turn.

Looks good Chris! I got that mutt running pretty damned good. My 288 is still running on that same jug as it was at the GTG a few years ago. I'm going to rebuild it this winter, we may need to do some machining on her

Yeah that was Ricky Hennessee. He posted here as "066 Stihl."He was a legend on the hot saw circuit for a time. He did some trick stuff- one project was an 056 Magnum top end on an 066 with a pipe.

His 031s were really cool- full circle cranks, big Walbro WG carbs, pipes, oversized clutches- he had some cool stuff. I've been told that he's retired now though.

The 031 is a good old saw. I worked on a trails crew in high school for the U.S. Forest Service and we had 031s and 032s. I spent two summers beating my brains out on large blow-down with those saws.

Nice job.I have fixed quite a few 031s with bad ignitions and sold them. I still have parts to put one together for me. I even have a chainbrake clutch cover. The mufflers arent restrictive at all so I dont think any gains can be made there.;)

Saw Stalls out 1/2 way through the cut

I am at a little bit of a stopping point with trying to trouble shoot this saw. The problem is 1/2 way through the cut it starts to die out and stall (I am waiting for my video to upload as I am posting this). Hopefully, the video shows more detail of the issue that I am having but does something like this sound like a points issue under heavy load? Nothing has changed on this saw since I posted my last video of the saw running.

I should note that I did rebuild the carb with new pieces parts and a new fuel filter. I did have somewhat of a kink in the fuel line coming out of the tank but I got that straightened out and the issue didn't go away.
