I picked up a 36" D196 404 bar for my Homelite 750. I'm trying to figure out the DL count. By looking at the numbers on the bar does 112 sound right? I think it's close because I have a 32" 404 for my P62 and it's 101DL.

Can't help you on the DL but it seems funny that you "picked up" one up. You didn't have one on the skid from a few months ago?

Ed my 36" Poulan branded Windsor bar which is actually a Homelite mount takes 104 links of .404 if I remember right.

112 sounds like a lot for that but who knows, it depends on the bar design sometimes.

I have several 109 drive chains from an 084 if you dont need brand new.

Should be somewhere in the 104-108 range depending on sproket at both ends.

I believe it's 106. If you lay the chain in the groove of the bar before making a loop, wrap the chain tightly around the bar and then leave yourself 6 or 7
drivers beyond the end of the bar and that will give you the total driver count.

I just double checked the 101dl loop I have. With the bar on the saw, slid all the way back closest to the clutch, the 101dl falls short a good 2" from the tip. The saw has a 7 pin, the bar does have a pretty deep belly. The 112 may be right. I think I'll order a 112 loop, I can always shorten it.

I'll let you guys know the out come. I'm probably wrong (too long), but I'd rather be on the safe side.

Mount the bar without the clutch cover. Clamp bar at mid slot. Measure all the way around bar and drive sprocket. Divide the length (in inches) by .808 for .404 pitch. (.75 for .375 pitch, .65 for .325 pitch).

That's awesome info Brian!!

I did what you said, I came up with 85.5". Divided by .808 = 105.8 = 106DL

Of course JJ and Jim were right on the money like normal. :msp_thumbsup:

With 3/8 chain I leave 5 drivers. That is up to 36" bars. Do you need to leave more for .404 or for bigger/older saws?

It depends on the length of the chassis and the size of the sprocket, as Jim mentioned.

Obviously chassis length is one reason why an 088 takes more drivers than a 660. In the older Homelites it can be even more of an issue.

That makes sense. The 33" sprocket nose D196 bar I got from a guy that had it on a Homelite 750 came to me with a 100DL .404 loop. I haven't mounted it on a saw yet.

I also have a 36" hardnose to mount on my 900D (or my XP1130 if I convert it to .404). I'd do the math to be sure, but my guess is that 106DL will work on it too.

My XP1020 parts saw came with a 30" cut length Cannon RN (marked HO3063) and a 95DL loop of .404. The saw had a .404-8 rim on it. The same 95DL loop of .404 fits fine on the 31" cut length Cannon large frame Mac RN bar (marked 3163) when I put it on a 790 with a .404-7 rim.

That's an old chain, and it may be stretched a bit. I haven't decided if I'm going to order a 95 or 96DL loop for the McCulloch. I also haven't decided if I'm going to put a 94 or 95DL loop on my good Homelite XP1020. I'm going to run a .404-7 rim with that bar as I cut mostly hardwoods and I want to take it easy on the clutch.

Are you positive that it is a D196?? The part number leads me to believe it is a D023.

They both will fit the 750. I took a look at the Oregon book and it says the correct driver count of .404 on a D023 mount bar attached to a 750 with a 7 tooth gear is 106 count

Just had time this morning Bill. You are correct. I laid a nos D196 bar on top. The slot is exact, the oil hole is about 1/8" off center to center, and the adj. holes are a little closer to the slot on one of them... can't remember which one now. Thanks for the info.
