Trying them all
Well, after the comments I received on the Jonsered 2172 I had posted about a couple days ago, I went back to that pawn shop to take another look. On closer inspection, I noticed that the chain brake handle is missing. I tried the brake and it works, so just the handle and attaching hardware is absent. Also, the choke knob is broken off. There is a little stub sticking out but it requires a tool to pull the choke. Also the chain is pretty much used up. It is just about back to the witness line so maybe one more sharpening, wouldn't be surprised if some teeth were broken, I didn't closely inspect the chain as that's a minor deal to me. The bar is a Jonsered branded Total 20". On the drive link of the chain, there was a 72 so I am assuming it is an Oregon 3/8" x .050 gauge. Correct? If so, I have that chain's equivalent in stock on rolls. So anyway, I take the saw outside the shop and fire it up. Had the "ning ning ning" sound of a 70's dirt bike. I assume that is normal. It seemed to run fine and wanted to cut some wood but none available. I made an offer and after some negotiation came home with it. That's as much as I know at this time.
Now, they also had another Jonsered there. This would be the second Jonsered I have ever seen. It was a 2138C and seemed really heavy. I am assuming it is in the 40cc class? That one seemed to be in pretty good condition and had a 16" bar if I recall correctly. What are those worth? They had a $150 price on it. Considering they usually list the junky Homelights and Poulans for $70 to $100 that doesn't seem too bad. Not looking for a little saw though.
They also had a Stihl HS74 hedge clipper. That is interesting to me because the one I have only cuts pencil size stuff. This one cuts thumb size stuff. However, they're asking $200 which puts it out of my price range...
I looked at the Poulan 306A and it was the single muffler screw and I ran it. The bucking spike was missing and I noticed there is a crack in the metal where the bucking spike would attach. (physical damage ) That sorta ruined it for me as I see this as a collector saw as opposed to a cutting saw. I would've flipped it if I could've gotten it cheap enough. It ran fine (smoked a bit) That one is $79.99 and at a different pawn shop.
The last saw of interest was a Husky 61. This saw seems intact but the price was $230 so I didn't look farther (didn't run it) It has the wire chain brake handle.
