Back from the dealer. Have the parts in hand and hope to assemble it all this afternoon. I got a brake handle, bushing and two odd screws. My wallet is about $40 lighter but hopefully the saw will be fully operational with the addition of these pieces. I was able to view a 372 and 2172 side by side and see the difference in the top handle angle. I also found a downed pine tree in the dog pen and that will be my test wood. It's small and better suited to the Stihl 018C or 009L but it is the only thing around here that needs cutting, unless....

Rats Rats Rats! The chain brake handle is the wrong one. I didn't notice it until I installed it but when in the tripped position the top engine cover prevents it from being retracted. It looked ok setting on it at the dealer but once installed only took about two seconds to realize that was a fail. I am hoping to hear back from them on how to resolve this. (they don't have a different one and will have to order it I suppose.)

I was going to go get that saw this afternoon. I went and looked at it and ran it a min at the pawn shop but I was broke last week. It sure seemed to run good. What did you think of the shop. I only live about a mile away if that from it.

Now, they also had another Jonsered there. This would be the second Jonsered I have ever seen. It was a 2138C and seemed really heavy. I am assuming it is in the 40cc class? That one seemed to be in pretty good condition and had a 16" bar if I recall correctly. What are those worth? They had a $150 price on it. Considering they usually list the junky Homelights and Poulans for $70 to $100 that doesn't seem too bad. Not looking for a little saw though.
.

Go ahead and spend the extra on the Jonsered 2138  Or you could just save the money and buy the Poulan to begin with. There the same saws.... :D

Which saw? I mentioned several. The shop with the Jonsereds is on hwy 16 about halfway between home depot and downtown. (epawn superstore). They have tools by the truck full there, eh? There is another one 80 yards further east on the same side of the road. They had the Poulan 306A and the Husky 61 and a Poulan 3400.

The epawn store is the one that had a Poulan 5400 Countervibe for months. It finally disappeared. Guess I need to be careful about mentioning "finds" in the future, eh? lol.

There are no photos because the cameras were at the regional track meet where my wife was taking pictures of my son taking first place in the 1,600 meter. He runs the 3,200 tomorrow evening. Maybe I can get some pics tomorrow.

Cameras were busy again today as son wins first place in the 2 mile at region (3,200 meter). yea!

After multiple attempts to get the Jonsered and Husky dealer (he also sells Shindaiwa I noticed) to get back with me regarding the incorrect chain brake handle, I bagged up all the parts and receipt, hopped on the old Honda 750 and rode over there. When he saw me and we greeted each other he finally took the time to look up the correct part in his book. Oh, um seems he doesn't have a book for the 2172. Had one for the 2171 but wasn't sure what if anything changed... Tried calling his parts distributor but the guy was out until next week some time. Grrrr! Now I think I know why the Jonsered I own is the first one I ever saw. At any rate, I returned the brake handle that didn't fit so at least I got out from under that. The attaching hardware was correct so I have that. Just need the plastic handle. A google search basically turns up nothing. I will work at it until I find a chain brake handle, run the saw some but I have a strong feeling that it may turn up in the classifieds here eventually. A saw I can't readily get parts for is not too useful to me. I am not a collector, they're just tools to me. Oh, and the 2172 he had in stock had been sold. So I know there's another one out there somewhere... He had a Husky 372xp and a 390xp along with some smaller stuff. A pretty spiffy looking Shindaiwa top handle climbing saw too. Anyway, Jonsered saws are not my friend right now. It is especially frustrating as I have a job of removing a medium large downed pine and was planning on using it to test the 2172 out.

--you can run it without the chainbrake handle/ chainbrake stuff? I mean, it is still a clutch cover right? Cob a long screwdriver to it sticking out, something.... Good enough for one pine tree..

Oh, and we need the winning times for those track events......

I could run it without the chain brake handle, but I won't. Regarding the fast boy, he placed in 7th place in the mile at State semi-finals this past Saturday with a time of 4:46. He placed 3rd in the two mile with a time of 10:44. That qualifies him in both events for the state finals in Jefferson, GA late next week.

If you dont want to run that Jred without a chainbrake I know someone one doesnt have a problem running it lol.

Oh, I will be running it. Just going to wait until I have all the parts in close formation. I called another Jonsered dealer (Greenville, GA) and they were going to check on price and availability. Still waiting to hear back...

My affection for Jonsered is quickly waning.

Well, I heard back from the second Jonsered dealer finally today. (after calling them again). The person called back to inform me that the chain brake handle for the Jonsered 2172 would be about $25 plus $10 shipping. Before I could respond to that he then informed me that the part was back-ordered and it would probably not be available until the end of summer. Ok, WHAT???? End of Summer??? Sheeesh!

My affection for these supposedly great saws is quickly beginning to fizzle. This is a current production saw, not some classic from 30 years ago and they can't supply a chain brake handle? What kind of product support is that?

Guess I'll have to try some of the forum members to see if anyone here has one. (or can get one) but I am pretty ticked with the situation right now.

I did not buy this saw to flip it, I fully intended to put it in my lineup as the missing 70cc saw but....I am thinking the Stihl 460 is becoming more and more appealing to me.

Well thats not good. Have you tried looking at ebay. Husky and jred are pretty much the same. I dont see why a husky brake handle wouldnt fit. I know the handle bars are different but Im not sure of that handle. If you give up on it I got first dibs.

The saga continues...

So I called the third nearest Jonsered dealer today since I struck out at the first two. We are now talking about a place 30 miles away. Basically, they wouldn't look up a part for availability unless I actually brought the saw in there for them to look at. I have the model, serial number and anything else they could have needed but wouldn't do it over the phone. I respect their position if that's how they do (or don't do) business but I am not going to drive 60 miles to have them tell me the part is back ordered like #2 place did. They both use Tilton who is the distributor for this area.

So reaching farther out, I checked Lynchburg, VA since my wife will be there today and no dealers in the vicinity, Checked the Grand Rapids area of Michigan since I will be up there in the next few weeks to pick up a Bridgeport mill. Nothing convenient there either.

So now I am back to searching online and striking out at every attempt.

This is a two year old $800 saw and I can't get a brake handle???

So, I load up the saw and drive to the Husqvarna dealer in town. They were very helpful to the point of removing a handle from a 372xp in their showroom and installing it on the Jonsered. Won't work, they're are enough differences besides the angle and color to preclude that option.

So now...

I am very frustrated (if you couldn't tell) with the dearth of support for this brand. I don't have a part number for the brake handle and thus don't know if one off of a 2171 would work.

Anyone have this lying around on a shelf in the shop?

If I don't resolve this soon, start looking in the classifieds, grrr!
