Well, I found an IPL for the CS2172. So now I have some part numbers. This will allow me to do some more creative searches.

I took a few photos finally.View attachment 237264View attachment 237265View attachment 237266View attachment 237267View attachment 237268

I tried embedding these photos with the instructions from manyhobies but don't get any of the drop downs he is referencing.??

Have you tried contacting Tiltons directly and explain you situation, efforts, and the publicity they are receiving?

Sorry to hear of your Jred troubles. As a dealer I've had many of the same from Tilton. I waited 6 weeks for a P&C for a 2172 then realized that they changed the way they were packaged and didn't come with a base gasket now I'm waiting again. I just double checked Tiltons site for the brake handles and the 2172 handle is definetely backordered. 2171 handle is available. 2172 handle is priced at $22 bucks. 2172 is a great saw, I'd be inclined to get the saw on the counter at the dealer you are most comfortable with and fit the 2171 handle on it and see if you cant file something down to make it work.

found the parts (I think)

Well, with the IPL's of the 2172, 2171 and 372 I was able to determine that the parts I need (brake handle and choke knob) are specific to the 2172. Started some more intensive searching and via phone was able to order the parts from...... California. (I'm in Georgia)

Guess this doesn't really seem to fit under "your local dealer" category but I am just happy I found this source. I will be happier yet if/when the parts actually show up.

Now I just move on to other things for the next couple weeks while these are being sourced and shipped to me. I'll be out of town on three trips during that time period anyway.

This saw was the first Jonsered I actually touched and may be the last. NOT impressed by support by a long shot.

I will admit I am looking forward to running the thing and will put a couple tanks through it at least before I decide whether to add it to the line up or send it down the road. I am leaning heavily towards the latter.

This saw is in very nice condition, probably used for tornado clean-up. So I was happy to have acquired it. funny how easily opinions can be swayed.

I think the 372xp handle could have been made to work and I may have done that with something out of my pile but I am not going to buy a new wrong part. The handle angle was definitely off but on the right side it fit slightly different and while it would mount, it wouldn't trip. Hope the problem is resolved now with the parts order. The guy I purchased the parts from said they show available ($26.00). Does Tilton only distribute part of the USA?

I broke the brake handle on my 2150 and replaced it with one from a Husky 350. I had to cut the bottom with a coping saw so the handle would throw but other than that its worked fine. Will the Husky handle attach to both of the mounting points on the J-Red?

The handle will attach to both points but I didn't like the difference in angle of the handles. It is pretty significant and this places the chain brake handle in a position other than where it should be for best protection.

Try this then. Replace brake handle and grab handle from a 372. ( if it fits of course) Then when your new J-Red brake handle arrives resale the Husky parts. I would think the Husky grab handle would be readily available used.

Who knows, you may like the way the Husky handle fits and keep it that way.

The Jonsered is back out in the shop now instead of on the kitchen table (wife out of town) and it'll just sit there until the proper parts come in. I have other saws I can use if a need arrives.

I was just notified someone is looking to have a plane ferried from Fairbanks, Alaska to this part of Georgia. So if I decide to do that I won't have much time for cutting with it anyway. Sounds like a good adventure with the son?

Got the parts!

Well my wife brings a box into the bathroom where I was soaking my aching back (from loading pine rounds on Saturday) and sure enough it was the Jonsered parts. Well crap, I was just cleaning up and am leaving in the early am for Idaho so won't have a chance to try the saw. I did have to go out after supper and install the parts (brake handle and choke knob). I was a bit nervous as the parts bags said Husqvarna and they are both specific to the Jonsered. However, the parts fit perfectly and now the saw is complete. I had to remove the shroud that covers the cylinder and carburetor and looking under there reinforces my observation that this saw has seen very limited use.

On a side note, I was very happy with the contact I had with Simonian's in California. The shipping was reasonable ($6.00) and the parts were received sooner than expected. I hate to think I have a saw that I would need to support from the west coast but it may be doable. I will need to put this into wood to see what I think. I have never run a saw in this cc class so won't have much to compare with but I am looking forward to trying it out. I'll be back in town on Saturday so we'll see. All I have to cut is some pine that needs to be noodled but that should give a feel for the saw. More later...
