Anyone have an approximate cost of having a dealer upgrade the 361 oiler to the 460? Or what it would entail to do it myself? Looking at both options as work leaves me very little play time this season!!!

You need the control bolt, pump piston and the rubber rings for the control bolt. You don't have to buy new ones you can use the ones you have on your 361 control bolt. You will need a small punch to drive out the roll pin that holds in the control bolt. You will also have to remove the brass plug that holds in the pump piston. Pliers / vice/ 2 screwdrivers.
It is an easy project and many of us have done it. I would try and do it your self. If you get in a bind just reach out and someone can help

Update to original post, I had the HO oiler from the 460 R installed in my 361. Before I had it done it was burning my 25" b/c cutting basically anything over 18 inches due to lack of oil. Now it throws oil from top to bottom and everything in between!!!! Thanks all for the tip, well worth it!

Is the ms460 oiler a direct fit, or do you have to retrofit the 361 oiler?

I had the dealer do it, but from what I was told it is a direct fit. You would want the oiler from the 460 R, because I don't believe the standard 460 has the HO oiler

Yes it is a direct fit, and yes you need the oil pump from a 460r. The regular 460 does not come with the high output oil pump.

The 460 and 460R oil pump body is the same as the 361. As said above there are two small parts that are different inside them. The stock 361 will pump 15cc, the 460 will pump 18cc, and the 460R will pump 24cc. From my '361 options and mods' thread on AS back in 2008:

You can replace the 361 oil pump with the full 460R (3/4 wrap) high capacity oil pump assembly. The Stihl part number is:

1128 640 3250 full oil pump assembly

You can also keep the 361 oil pump and just replace the piston and control bolt with the 460R parts. The Stihl part numbers for these are:

1128 647 0602 oil pump piston
1128 647 4803 oil pump control bolt

You can also replace the pump with the 460 oil pump or parts, and it will gush a bit less. If you are running a 28 inch bar, the plain 460 oil pump parts should be fine.

1128 640 3206 full oil pump assembly

or:

1128 647 0606 oil pump piston
1128 647 4806 oil pump control bolt

Thanks for the info, I've got an ms361 that needs an oil pump, while I might not need the high output version it's nice to know the standard pump will fit and pump a little more.

I got my info off your post when I ordered mine. Best thing I did next to buying the saw!!!!

I would go with the HO if you decide to replace it. You can always turn it down if you don't need it!!!

I did this upgrade on my MS660 in 2009. Makes it oil enough to run the 36” bar with no problems. Not hard to do if your familiar at all with working on saws

Does this pump mod work on the 362C also?

Yes, the oil pump is the same part number in the 361 as the 362. So its the same upgrade in both saws. They both come stock with Stihl PN #1135 640 3200 oil pumps.

Similarly the 460 and the 461 have the same oil pumps. Stihl PN #1128 640 3206 or #1128 640 3250 (HO pump in the R models)

They can all be swapped around.
