Has anyone tried this conversion yet? I know it's been said that it doesn't fit, but has anyone tried to make it work?

I'm less than impressed with the filtration of the 681. Even with the felt filter, significant fines are getting past the filter. It looks like I'll bre resorting to oiling the filter as some have done with the 7900. I'll get some pics later and try to show what I'm seeing. I really hate to put this negative vibe on the 681, but I don't like what I see.

My 7900 had a little dust in the intake when I would look, but my 066 and 024 do the same thing. I have a extra HD air filter kit maybe Maldeney can try it out but from looking at it the other day it doesn't look to be close to a fit, unless your just wanting to use the filter and new filter intake and try to make the filter cover work.

Thanks Gink. I'd be interested to see what he finds. I would be more than willing to hack up the inside of my filter cover if it could be made to fit over the HD filter. I don't want to have it sticking out though. If I were going to go that route, I'd just put a v-stack on it and run a small K&N with an Outerwear.

Pics coming.

I think the boys from down under did some talking about this. I don't remember what they came up with or where it was posted it.

Still cloaking? What for? But then again I guess why not?

This was all nice and clean and has only seen about 1 tank of fuel since then.

I'm not worried about stuff caught in the filter, but it can be difficult to remove and clean well.

Here's what bothers me. I see some of this on Husky filters as well, but not this much.

There's much less in the carb throat itself. Most of it's in the filter as above.

Look how dirty the carb is. The entire carb box seems to be taking in too much debris.

It looks to me that you can see where it's coming through the media here.

Then as the air flows towards the back of the filter and is concentrated, it collects on the back wall as it heads down. Most of it is caught in spitback oil before entering the carb.

Nearly all of this comes from the throat of the filter. I wiped the carb throat first and showed almost nothing.

Thats not good over time tho. I know you are dilligent with your saws Brad, but many are not and that could be a problem for those who aren't.

There's an awful lot getting to the outside of the filter, chips and such to begin with. The cheaper cost of the Solo has gotta be made up somewhere I guess...

That's EXACTLY what my 7900 looked like on the inside before the HD filter. It was rather nasty. Those stock filters are just plain worthless. Not trying to go off topic, but there is just no comparison in the difference between the stock and HD air filters.

If one could be slightly modified to fit a 681, then I'd end up buying a 681 in the future. But the 681 with it's stock filter is a real turn off for wanting to own that saw.

Hopefully someone can come up with something or (even better) Solo will have an HD kit for the 681 eventually as well!!

Well, no wonder you guys complained! The end user should not have to pay for an upgrade to fix this. This is not acceptible IMHO, and should be repaired at the manufactures expense. Yes, that's a little strong. But I don't see how this could have been missed in R&D. I noticed this from the very first tank of fuel.

I think if it took dolmar that look to come out with an HD kit and their sales numbers/presence are indeed higher than solo I cannot imagine that solo will ever put out an HD filter kit. I know on my little 651sp the filter is the same as the flocked filter. Less material seems to get through though. Does the 681 have the nylon screen pre-filter like a lot of the other solos? It looks like some pretty large chips got into the airbox somehow...

Yeah, that's partially true. I didn't have a problem paying for HD filter though. It cost me an extra $70, but I never even thought about it. I was thankful that Dolmar finally made something available.

One way or another I'm sure that it'll be stock on the 6400, 7300, and 7900 in the future. And that's gonna be how Dolmar "fixes" the problem (but all three saws will jump up by $50 in price I'm sure!).

When it comes to spending money to improve something, I most certainly will not complain. I didn't mean to come off as complaining. I was making an objective observation of the stock filter and it's results. :)

Brad it sounds like you are :angry2:, you should learn how to sharpen your chain better...:jawdrop:

:help:

That's the same situation I found on my Makita 5001. And I don't know if the situation is better on the new model.

Good luck!

7sleeper, you have made my day complete. I've been waiting for someone to say that all day. Yes, it did have a freshly sharpened chain on it, lol.

You know Brad, I knew the trap was there just waiting to be sprung and everyone sofar was simply to polite or respectful to say anything, that I just had to take the blame and jump with both legs right into it!

Hope it goes away with oiling!

I noticed it makes a big difference what type of wood someone is cutting....

Is this your next trap....
