i recently purchased a stihl 066. just seeing if i can get any info on it. it has a decomp valve. serial number 133458208.image_1.jpg image_2.jpg image.jpg

i was told it needs new rings. was going to go ahead and get a big bore kit for it. any thoughts on which one to buy. hyway vs nwp from baileys. i am planning on using this saw for a small alaskan mill. what other upgrades should i do.

Have U seen anyone post that they got a big bore kit and it runs stronger than stock? I doubt it!

If your saw was made back then, it likely has good port timeing. I'm not sure about 066s, but the 046s made when your saw was made have better port timing, the EPA forced changes over the next couple of years.

I would save and re-use your cylinder if at all possible. If you just need new rings, do it, if U need a new piston get a Meteor. They are the best AM parts.

Use either a Stihl HD-2 or Max Flow air filter, and get a dp muffler cover. You will have to tune the saw a bit richer, but it will run a lot stronger with these parts. If you can afford it, get it ported by one of the builders, it will make a huge difference.

If you want to see the dyno results, go to the thread "Dyno tested ... Mastermind Ported 660 vs Stock 660 vs Dual port 660"

You can't get much better info than that!

Get the HO oiler or mod yours. The max flow will be better for milling. The HD 2 packs too quickly and will need to be cleaned every couple cuts milling.

If that's an 066, then why doesn't the recoil cover have STIHL moulded into the cover ?
Looks more like an 064 recoil cover, but 064's didn't have decomps, and I thought 066 flat tops had no decomps - weren't the decomps brought in with the bubble plastics ?

There was a few years of flat top with decomp.
