Hello all,

New to the forum. I removed the back cover to clean air filter, check plug and get ready for summer work. I used compressed air to blow around the carb and interior mechanism. When I tried to put it all back together the on/off/run/choke lever keeps getting jammed and will not move out of full choke whne the cover is installed. I can't tell where the problem is, of course. Everything looks like it fits and lines up where it belongs.

Any ideas? I'd like to see a parts diagram but can't find one anywhere online.

Thanks for any help.

Silly question, but are you trying to push the lever off choke?

The stihls, you have to press the throttle trigger and they disengage themselves.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've just put it all back together and plan to take it to the local repair shop tomorrow.

But, to answer your question: the lever won't go off choke either by pushing it up or by squeezing tyhe throttle trigger. When the saw was working it was a little difficult to move it from choke to run but it did with a little nudge. Now, no movement. when the cover is off I can see where I think all the pieces line up but even then the lever is stuck in position. If I then squeeze the trigger (cover and ir filter off) the lever and pivot batr pop out of position.

Maybe if I could see a diagam of where things are sukpposed to be it might help me locate the problem.

thanks.

If I am understanding this correctly, the saw won't come out of choke with the cover on, but will with the cover off???

If this is the case, most likely your cover is not seated properly. If you have it installed on an angle to the filter, the groove for the switch will catch the choke before it can be moved.

Likely the kill switch isn't installed properly - easy to do. There was a thread just a few days ago in which Fish posted a picture of what the swtch should look like when back together. Look back a few days for another 290 thread. You'll find it.

i have a similar problem with my 290 the control lever pops out sometimes out of the recess that holds it in place
and binds it up. mine is simple to fix with engine not running and cover off hold throttle open and work the lever back into position in the recesses that the linkage sits in
when the throttle is released its back in position hope this helps you.

I had to bend the spring steel on mine to lessen the preasure, and put some Dielectric Grease on the groove the spring rides in. Much better now. It's was not fun when it happend (twice). Went to blip the trigger after she fired at half choke and nothing. Saw running with the brake on and you can't even shut it down without tearing the cover off. Never one time have I had to deal with this problem on my "1996" 021 It took me by surprize to say the leased.

Update on the problem: after looking at an illustration of how things are supposed to fit together I saw that the contact spring and switch shaft were incorrectly fitted. Corrected my mistake and now the master contraol is working much better. However, it still is (and always has been) a bear to move from "warm engine start" to "run" and then to "off." I'll grease the shaft at the contact point with the spring and see if there is any improvement.

Not sure with the search function all screwed up. It was a post by Fish around July 4th. Going back in the listings only goes back one month and searching for posts by Fish only shows really OLD posts.

Anyone else see that picture/post and knows how to get back to it??

This is an 025 but they should be very similar.
