Uncles got a MS390, Brand new, only had a few tanks through it. Gets it hung up, and being the impatient type, hooks the truck to the tree, pulls said tree, smashes said Stihl.

Everything minus the handle bar (I think), clutch cover and actual engine/intake/etc are smashed..broken..cracked..etc. This saw was only a few tanks old, fresh from the dealer.

This was close to a year ago. Recently started looking for parts for the saw, but I really dont know if there are other models (310?) that would also have the parts that we need for the saw.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Depending on when the saw was made the top covers may be a bit different. The recent MS390's have a compression release on the top handle. The older ones are made exactly like the MS290's and MS310's. There are a few differences on the pull rope covers in design but not in function. The old style 029's and 039's have the standard generic cap that is removed with the scrench, the newer MS390's have the flippy caps.

As has been stated for the majority of the saw the parts are interchangeable. The carb is going to be different for the MS390 versus the MS290. You should be able to find quite a few parts over at FLEAbay. There are times when it is more cost effective just to buy a parts saw. Buying parts individually can get expensive (even used). The MS390 piston's and cylinders can be as rare as hen's teeth though. If you've never been into a saw like this there is a great photo tutorial build thread here by THALL. Use the search function and you can easily find it. Happy Sawing.

Lets see some pics of the saw!

This saw is the flippy cap version. As far as I've noted visually, most anything mechanical is ok on the saw, most of the plastic on the other hand..is demolished. I'm actually surprised that the recoil isnt broken.

I will try to get some pics of it hopefully going to convince him to tear it down some and see just what is wrong with it and compile a solid list of what is needed.

If all of the plastic is broken, you are in bad shape. Only about 30% of that saw is metal. If the engine is good, you can probably part it out on Ebay, and get almost enough for a new 390 with warranty, (or 391). 390 engine should bring $200 or more if the fins are perfect.

Better yet, Go buy a new 290 for $350. Swap in 390 engine carb and oiler. Sell 290 engine for $150 on ebay. Either sell the rest of the pieces individually and make up the other $200+ or sell it as a lot, and get on with your life.

Doc, there is no doubt now why you changed your forum name. Your recommendation is a great idea. I'd rep ya but I gotta spread some around!

those 390's are good saws. It is a shame to hear one is hurt:cry: I love mine. Make her well again.

I think some pictures would give us a better idea for a solution for your problem.

So get the pics up!:)

I'll get pics as soon as I get back to my Uncles.

In all honesty, I've only ran a few stihls in my life. Mostly J'red and Husky around here.

Ya know, there aren't that many people here on AS who have a long stretch of mechanical saw experience, can express themselves well in writing, are clear thinking, and are willing to help. I can count them on the fingers of one hand.

I'd rep the Dr. too, but I gotta shoot more bullets at other folks before I fire off a rep round in his direction.

Sorry for the lame pictures, phone was all I had.

$$$$$$$$$

Seriously though, would be a ok saw to build if a guy wanted to drop that kind of money on it.
