it's been too wet, and today I ran out of paperwork to catch up on...so I built a tailgate saw vise to make sharpening on the job easier

BOM: 47.5" long 2x10, 9" long 2x2, old C-clamp, hold down straps from bed extender (you'll see), large brass grommets, 1.25" wood screws, 3.5" wood screws, short lag bolts, washers to suit

here's the mock up...close up and overall

I drilled holes in the C-clamp body, used washers to space it out from the 2x2, and mounted it with 1.25" screws...then I mounted the block on the 2x10 such that the C-clamp was centered end-to-end, but closer to one side so the handle wouldn't bind

test fit (on the workbench) was good from both sides...2x2 stuck up a bit above the C-clamp spine, so less opportunities to ding the chain...at this point I planned to add eye-bolts on each end to bungee the saw down if I had stability problems

I've been waiting 7 years to find a good use for these babies...they're the hold downs from my pickup bed extender...so I cut the stitching to save as much strap length as possible

they were not used on the bed extender because I had a topper installed when I bought the pickup 7 years ago, and I had to shorten the extender so it would clear the topper latches...always planned to extend the hold downs...just never did...bungee cords worked just fine

anyway...so I doubled the ends over, burned a hole in em' with an old soldering iron, and installed some large brass grommets

they were secured with short lag bolts and washers 1.5" in and 2" up from the handle side

that's pretty cool, but, didn't you know that you're SUPPOSED to ding your chain at least 3 times when sharpening :hmm3grin2orange:

part deuce

second test fit showed interference with the lag bolts on the right side...thankfully the lag bolt hits the saw in the small notch at the back of the handle...so now it clamps farther back on the bar than I had planned, but adds some stability...these things happen...on the left side the saw clears the lag bolt just fine

after adjusting the straps, and fiddling with tightness, I'm satisfied with the result...it's not as stable as my bench vise, but much better than just a C-clamp on the tailgate

now why a 47.5" long 2x10 you might ask...to fit in the job box I have mounted in the pickup

this setup works pretty well...I filed a couple teeth on each side that were a touch long, and didn't have any flopping-around issues...should make sharpening on the job easier and faster

we'll see how it holds up

cheers!

I see you have a receiver hitch. For me an easier solution would be to mount a $20 CL vice on a 2x2 piece of square stock and just slip it in the hitch when needed.

But then you'd have to bend over or kneel down to sharpen the chain, instead standing... I'd rather be standing.

Good work Spidermonkey!

yeah...I thought about that...bring it up to tailgate level and swivel for each side...problem for me is that trailer is always attached when I'm jobbin'...could disconnect/reconnect, but for a one-man-band that's time/trouble

someday I'd like to try a magnetically mounted vise on the tailgate...find 3 scrapped K40's and mount it up...might never get it off though

Really nice...Stump-To-Go you made there!!!!...SPDRMNKY

That's sort of what I was saying could be made earlier...
Done for cheap and fits in your tool box too!!!...SWEET!!!

Nice work, I just keep one of the 20.00 vices from lowes bolted to the trailer. I've had it there for many, many years and I just pour bar oil on the threads every once in a while. It's above waist height so it makes it very easy to use.

That's cool SPDRMONKEY. Looks like a good set up for ya, and just another way to make sharpening saw's in the field easier, stump vise, tail gate vise, hitch vise. The hitch vise instead of bending over you could probably sit in a chair, and file sitting. All good idea's, and techniques. Thumbs up from me!
