The Zumbrota soft Maple is down!

Me and my dad had a good time. Always fun to drop a big one. Big silver maple measured 48" across the stump. I got to be the lucky one to cut the beast down. Used my 2101xp that I bought from Brad Snelling a while back. I had to stretch my 42" bar out just to make it. All went well there was a huge wind from the south blowing all day and we dropped the tree right into it. Got the whole thing quartered and butchered up into manageable sized pieces. Also got to use my tree monkeyed 064 for noodling, man I like that saw now. I was glad my dad got to join in he is very knowledgeable when it comes to cutting trees. Well here are some pics from the days festivities.

Nice!! That had to be a fun one to drop. The best part is you working with dad. He'll be talking about that for the longest time. It doesn't look like you have very much snow down there. Good Job! Lot of wood from that tree.

Had a great time yesterday, I thought everything went well. Dan and his family are great hosts and took good care of the help. Andy & his dad are great team, it was neat to see them work so well together.

Dan did you and the group ever make it down to the other cutting site later that afternoon?

Thanks for posting. Having your dad still handle a chainsaw at that age is great. I know it had to be a great day and that's a nice looking tree - not to mention the saws looked like they did the job. I fly into the twin cities sometimes when traveling to the midwest. The pics of the land are beautiful -- reminds me of being on the farm as a youngun with my dad, and uncles. Just a few shots brought back a lot of memories! Happy sawing! :msp_biggrin:

Thanks for the kind words! I was good to have a great bunch of guys give up a Saturday, drive a ways, and take care of a troublesome tree! Yes everything did go very well!

No we didn't do any other cutting.....but that's okay...... with tmurph bringing his splitter, we were able to get enough dry wood so they should be good for a while. Thanks again!

Yes....Andy and his dad do work together well! His dad has done this for years. One handshake from him and I knew he was a fit guy!

Yes...I'm sure Andy is blessed to be able to stihl work with his dad! Between the two guys they have a ton of saws! I asked his dad if he ever owned a small saw.....he had to think a bit....just a little...he did mention an MS200.

My dad is a real nice guy, kind of a best friend of mine. He has been chainsawing since the 50's. He has some great stories. We will never see him on the site here because he pretty much refuses to try to learn these dang computer thingies. Too bad, I know all of you folks would enjoy his stories. I am pretty sure he will make it to another GTG sometimes as he really enjoyed the day cutting with us. Thanks for all the kind words. Me and him have been cutting together since I was really young. Him and my brother in law ran a small tree service when I grew up and I was a hard worker helping as much as a young kid can. Thanks goes out to my dad for teaching me so much about saws and tree work.

Oh yea I also forgot to mention, tell your mother in law thank you for the great lunch. She makes some good homemade vegetable beef stew. I havent had any of that in a long time.

I had a great time. Good people, lots of wood to cut, and good home cooking to top it off.

Thanks to Grizz, I have another old school saw shop to check out when I get down that way too.

After cleaning the saws up, I dumped the rest of my can into the 7300 and didn't fill it. I'm calling it a gallon burned, in just a couple hours.

For those wondering, it was bwtween 2 and 3 hours from that tree hitting the ground till the last block was noodled.

Monstah trees! Love it!

Your dad might not like computers, but get him talking telling old stories and record it.

I just realised last year I failed to do that with my dad, who is in his 80s, and now has alzheimers, so it is too late. I have my memories, but it isn't the same for long term archival purposes for the next generations. Can you imagine sometime being able to listen to your great great grandfather telling stories, how neat that would be?

It's very encouraging to know everyone had a good time!

I let my MIL know the food was enjoyed! Just think.....I get food like that every time we're there!

Couple of questions....for the group.... Who said they'd like help planting trees in the near future?

Was it you Steve that said your laptop was having trouble with a loose power plug? I have repaired a number of those and would like to do it as a return favor.

Oh....I really didn't realize how big that tree was!

I wish my wife would have been there, she would have recorded the tree fall. She had to work. Oh well. I told co-workers about cutting that tree down and the first thing they ask is "how much did you get paid for cutting that down?" I tell them I did it for fun, they think I am a little nuts. Hey some people like golfing some people like going for a jog around a lake, I like cutting down monster trees.:msp_biggrin: :rock:

Well....I thank each and every one again that helped! Oh...you did get paid....food! LoL! Didn't we find you on the side of the road with the sign..... "will work for food"? OH...that was the guy last week! LoL!

Yes...I had thought of making a vid of it falling.....I asked my FIL if he could ....but he hadn't used his camera in over a year and the batteries would have to be charged.... IMHO....we're lucky we got pics! I didn't take any! I know there are some on my MILs camera....I'll have to get some of those.

Yep...we're a strange breed!

It was like everyone knew what to do! Everyone spent a bit of time moving rounds brush out of others way.... A very well nit thrown together team! LoL!

Yes the temps were great!....but it could have been a bit less windy.....but that would be having our cake and eating it too!

Well I finally got the splitter running! Got the flywheel tight enough so it the key wouldn't sheer! Got a bigger hammer! :jester:
