50:1 will do you fine. 16:1 was maybe back in 1940-something. Oil has gotten better over time is why we can run 50:1. You'll hear different of course.

This is only if you're using newly bought oil. If you actually have a can of 16:1 (or whatever) oil, mix it at that rate.

I found a montgomery ward saw on the curb (rebadged remington) with manual oiler. I was shocked when I saw it requires a 16:1 ratio. I'd never heard of an engine requiring that much oil!

My old OMC boat motors are 16:1, always end up with a rainbow slick following me around, kayakers get all upset, i find it best to act alarmed myself rather than reassure them it’s normal
I do the same when I fart at the checkout, wtf, who did that....
2 stroke smells better and no rainbow, well unless brown is in fashion.

It’s from back when straight 30wt non detergent motor oil was used as the mix oil. As prev stated, modern 50-1 will work just fine.
This gets argued about a lot in boat circles, fact is bearings and tolerances aren’t what they are now, for me, if i cared about it, I would use the recommended dosage. Babbitt bearings need a little extra.

This is the first I heard of.. 16;1 MIX
I HAVE SOME 40:1 , 32;1, 50:1 ... NOT GOING TO DO ANOTHER
Which mix would you use ?
It's for a Craftsman -358-356070
No need for 16:1 with modern oils, good for insect control though.

Lawnboy lawnmowers had babbit bearings requiring 16:1 OMC Marine rated TCW-3 in the late 60's early 70's , no black flys in the neighbourhood back then !

OMC went to needle bearings around 63-4-5-6, I believe. I have a 65’ 28hp and a 67 that one calls for 24:1 the other 50:1 both engines are identical, I suspect they weren’t trusting of the lighter mixture at first. ...just a theory

that is true also , tolerances were rather sloppy in the 60,s eventually in the early 70,s true 2 stroke oils were developed and engine technology tightened up and 32:1 became the standard . Oil was 50 cents a quart now some exotics are over $30 , ain't life Grand !

I like me some old 2 strokes

outboard ? I stated Lawn boy lawnmowers in my example .

No need for 16:1 with today’s oils. Really anything from 32:1 to 50:1 is going to work well. 32:1 will be slightly more power and more oil buildup on piston, rings, and plug. You will need to adjust the carb to match whatever you choose as a mix.

I would agree when Babbitt bearing are present , higher viscocity oil is required 16;1 or at least 32:1 with good friction modifiers should be used . I know if any of the lawnboy fanatics heard even 32:1 a lynching would be in order ! lol.

I was asking about this recently, as stated above OMC made their design change before deciding 50:1 was ok. Seems reasonable I could use 50:1 no problem but consensus was to use recommend ratio. I usually go heavy regardless, but of late ive been using the 67’ 33 hp and using 40:1, she ain’t getting any younger.
