Hello,

I bought a Dolmar 5105 very cheap (50€), what do you think about the bar and chain, what should be replaced?
Looks like a chain thrower to me:

- Chain catcher bracket
- Chain catcher rubber
- Sprocket
- Chain
- Bar

I have multiple 3/8" hobby, 0,050", 56 links, should I consider 16 inch blade?
3/8 Hobby equals 3/8 drive sprocket?

Okay I have other 16 inch saw, great for limbing (38 cc)
And 20 inch saw Husqvarna 61 Rancer which has equal power.

I am not familiar with the term, hobby , but if it is 3/8lp chain it takes a special sprocket for the 3/8 lp chain. There is a larger 3/8 chain that has larger cutters and depth gauges, it uses a different rim drive sprocket, that chain would be a little bit too aggressive for my liking on your saw. I run mostly .325 chisel chain on all my 50cc saws.

Yes it seems it is LP, could not find it on Google what "hobby" means in the shop where I buy supplies.
Comparing the spare chains indeed, there is a huge difference so never mind.
I wil read some topics about .325 and 3/8 to make the best choice.

Hobby was used by some companies to distinguish such chains from the full 3/8. That is, it's another name for Low Profile, Picco or Mini.

Before I went out and did any buying, I would make sure the bar groove is 100% free of debris. Junk packed in there can make it seem like the rails are too worn.

People throw chains for any number of user-error reasons.

I agree with the posters who like 325 on 50 cc saws. But, I also like the idea of the OP reading up on the issue and making a decision. At work we have some Husky 350s which are running 3/8 chain. They seem fine.

I have no additional comments about the pictured bar.

I will say, in general, there seem to be a lot of people who post on this site (as well as guys who work where I do), who throw away bars, chains, and sprockets which I would, and do, happily run.

Ik think 3/8 will be fine, then it's the same chain as the Husqvarna 61 Rancher, makes it easy to sharpen.

Now... Home brand (Kox is actually owned by Oregon), Oregon AdvanceCut or VersaCut?
Ik guess it doensn't matter that much, the price difference isn't that big.

Should I place it in between the 16 and 20 inch and choose 18 inch bar?
Ik prefer a light saw but will make 2 inch that noticeable difference for a firewood saw?

I RUN 3/8 FULL CHISEL 18" BAR ON MINE WORKS GREAT, ALSO CHANGED AIR FILTER ON MINE TO A FLOCKED ONE.
May I ask what you are mostly cutting with that setup,Mike? I cut more hardwood species more than softwood so that may be a reason I like .325 on 50 cc class saws, the 3/8" I have tried will drag the engine down below its powerband and often slips the clutch when the tree diameter comes close to 16", then the bigger saws come out.

It will work either way, I ran one with a 20 inch bar and 3/8 chain before and it cut ok but I also ran one with a shorter bar and .325, it cut great.

Never heard of a special sproket for 3/8 lp. 3/8 pitch is 3/8 pitch , but people confuse .325 with 3/8 all the time.
Sorry, it is not. While 3/8" pitch is the same the LP chain chassis is not the same as 3/8" standard chain, the drivers are smaller and different shaped, when an LP chain is run on standard sprockets the chain rides high and is often prone to being thrown, the drive tangs wear into the sprocket quicker due to not fitting properly.

Definitely a difference. Low pro sprockets are larger in diameter because picco links are shorter in height and the larger sprocket gets you closer to the pivot point at the rivets
