That's funny stuff, and I don't even know what a skeg isYessir! When I was a kid, we had a Bass Tracker 18.5' Fish & ski with a 115Hp Merc (TOWER OF POWER!!!). One spring, we were bringing it out of winterization & my dad had stored it w/the motor trimmed all the way down. He pulled the trailer from the side yard onto the driveway and SCRAAAPE..CRUNCH! Off snaps the skeg.

We had a big one about 4 years ago in the Minnewaska state park . You could see it on the mountain overlooking EllenvilleThe press reported that fire went over 600 acres… the Jennings Creek fire by Greenwood Lake has gone over 5,000 acres and 20% contained!!!
I cannot imagine fires like that in the NE! I spoke with foresters last year about the fire risks due to all the dead ash, hemlock, and pines around here and none were concerned. I attended a presentation where the areas in the Catskills were identified where there had been fires in the past and it was a relatively small amount near long time population centers. Basically nothing overall. I suspect things are different now!
The Minnewaska fire did seem pretty big at the time. Associates of mine live in the New Paltz, Gardiner, Kerhonkson, Napanoch areas and they were sucking smoke for days! The Canadian fires last year were the worst for smoke in northern Ulster… eyes watered and breathing was labored if you were outdoors. We had a big one about 4 years ago in the Minnewaska state park . There was a fatality in the Greenwood lake fire . An 18 year old park assistant was killed by a falling tree . He was on the job for a few months
I'm only 2 Counties above NYC. Last year is the first year I can remember that I really did not see anyone ice fishing. By Contrast, 5 mi from here is Ice Pond ... they used to cut the ice every winter to send down to NYC (for the ice boxes). They did not cut it until it was 18" thick! They would wait a long time for that now!Where all you guys are in NY, do the lakes freeze or can you use your boat in the winter?

That is not erosion. It burned up internally. The coil has no spark at all.Not that it's a good permanent solution but can you wrap that erosion in friction tape & run it that way until you can get a new coil wire?
Which LS do you have in there? Sounds like it's got some displacement so I'm gonna guess it's a 6.0.
My wife and I were an hour NW of Austin, Texas last Summer. The smoke from the Canada fires made it all the way down there. The Minnewaska fire did seem pretty big at the time. I have determined that my saws must be afraid of the wood. I always start them in the shop before I head to the woods, get to the woods, won't start.......Why does it always seem that when you want to use a gas powered tool it won't start. One of my brothers wanted to borrow my Husqvarna pole saw to take down a limb. I pull it out to make sure it runs. The damb thing would not start. I found it had no spark. The kill switch works fine. I pulled the coil out to find this. SOB ran great 6 months ago.
