Got it in the mail today. It still had a full tank of gas and oil (odd). It weighs 9.4lbs. without a bar but full of fluids ready to run. The serial number is not stamped but scribed??? I have a feeling this saw is not suppose to be out there.

Could be hot I would return it to a Stihl dealer they should give you face value for it or like a voucher for when it actually comes out. Iam pretty sure only prototypes exist and dealers were given to test and report and send back

runs and weighs the same as an 020t with the exhaust screen out. The carb is a chinese Zama 289 and has a high jet with a limiter on it.

Just realised this isn't in the chainsaw forum, i just followed the link from the other thread. Hopefully a mod will move it.

So it would appear you indeed have an MS201T (prototype). It will be interesting to see if there are any differences between yours and when the MS201T is released later.

How's the balance one handed? Front heavy like the husky's or dead on like the 200T?

I got this saw in the mail today. The saw weighs the same as an 020t. Once the exhaust screen is out (just like on all the 200t's) it runs the same as the 020t. The saw is balanced well. It has a Zama 289 chinese carb on it with a limited high jet. It pulls the 16" bar the same as the 020t (I ran the same bar and chain on both for a comparison). The plastic around the exhaust is a little better and the plastic below the clutch has a better clip to keep it from popping out. I do not see a reason to run out and buy an old ms 200t, I am going to buy a new ms 201t once it comes out. Not sure why this one is out though. Here are pics of the screen and the clutch cover off.

I called Corporate and they are looking into whether or not they are missing a saw. The guy I talked to took the serial number which is scribed in, not stamped and said he or someone from the tech dept. would get back to me.

What do you mean when you say the serial number is scribed in? Are you reffering to the yellow sticker or are the numbers actually scribed in with a scribing machine rather than stamped with dies?

The serial number is on the yellow sticker on the front and then they scribed the number on the serial number area, but the "v" in the number looks more like a number - it is just odd.

It sounds like you are saying somebody hand scribed the number that is on the yellow tag onto the area where the serial number is usually punched in at the factory.
If this is the case then it does sound a little odd. I mean the saw should have the serial numbers punched in at the factory before it left i suppose but maybe Stihl has decided to use just the sticker and that sounds odd too.

Of course all my saws have the serial number punched in before I bought them, the sale to me has been documented by the store I bought them. They wrote the serial numbers from the saw on the registration card that comes with the saw, both copies of the purchase receipt and they also hand scribed my name into the case of the saw. I am impressed by the diligence and it makes me feel better to know these steps are taken.
Its good you are following up on it, it may turn out to be nothing to be concerned about. But I am wondering why the serial number was not punched/stamped into the case at the factory myself.
I could be mistaken that the numbers are to be put there at the factory and it may be the job of the retailer to engrave the serial numbers themselves... if that is the case that sounds odd too.

So it's heavier than the 200T.....bummer......

Any idea where the extra weight came from? (Cylinder wall thickness, more plastic, etc etc???, California emissions muffler crap....??)

Stihl called this morning and said that the saw is stolen and they are sending a call tag for it. Ups should be picking it up today. They also said that there is one other saw missing out of Baltimore.
