One fast little 238SE!!!

J.Walker sent me his 238SE with a stock 242XP top end. It ran real well turning 15,500 WOT. I ported the piston and cylinder, reduced the squish, modded the muffler, installed a 242XP carb, and put it back together. It ran good before but just didn't have the "grunt" I like in a saw. That's not the case now! It's now turning 17,000 RPMs and has tons of torque in the cut. I suspect this little bugger will handle a 8-pin .325 sprocket well, but I don't have the tool for this clutch here.

The baseline and initial ported cuts were made with a sharp Carlton chisel chain. I'm less than impressed. I then switched it out for a brand new out of the box Stihl RSC. Wow, what a difference. Tonight I'll be square grinding this chain to see what else can be had.

I had every intention of selling both of mine. Now it looks like I'm going to have to port one of them and it may not go any where. This 238 ran stronger than either one of mine, but I'm suspecting thats because both of mine have the restrictive flocked filter where as his has the nylon screen filter.

Very nice indeed, whats the difference if there is one from a 238SE and 242XP? That baby got faster and faster, you shouldnt have stopped!

That's becuase I was pushing on it in the second cut with each chain. It's got the torque to keep pulling it with more pressure on the bar. It should really shine with a square ground chain on it.

I allways liked the nylon screen filters better (44 micron, not the black bodied
80 micron winter filters).
They are easier to keep clean as well as less restrictive.

Looks like I'm going to have to break down and get me one. I agree with the easier to clean point too.

now you aught to know better than to be pushing.

I have "heard" that they run even better than the P5000, if you put a P5000 engine in there (same size, but still different).......

Were you doing some woodburning in those vids?
(more so with the Carlton, but some with the Stihl too)

I'm quite interested in those because of my 55. Wouldn't the 55 top end give you the most power out of any stock top end for that saw? Or would a smaller closed post top end be better.

I see that it has the same stroke as the 50, 55 etc. but I have no idea how the bolts would line up. Again, not trying to hijack the thread, just adding my 1/2 a cent...

Now ya got me wondering the same thing.... I have always had an eye out for a clean 50 thinking I'd put a 55 top end on it. Mainly just because you never see 50's. Never heard of a 5000 top end on one.

Yeah my 55 has open ports, I've heard some have closed, don't know for sure.

That 238 is smokin'. One heck of a sleeper!

Yep, but it quit beeing a 238 some time ago, except for the badge on the starter cover - now it is a heavily modded 242xp.

Splitting hairs, I just wonder how it would cut with Oregon LP chain - in theory it should have a slight max sharpness edge on the RSC, because of the thinner chrome........



Btw, I don't really care about small differenses at all, as it doesn't matter to me.

This 238se was the first new chainsaw that I bought. Now I have some renewed interest in it. I have alot of testing to do. I want to find the right bar and chain comb for it. Hope this bar that SawTroll gave me works well on the 238
