Well the saw shop called and said my other cylinder is in so i will pick it up thursday hope fully it will the right one this time i will let ya'll know thanks Troy

Been in contact with another member about my 238se and it looks like the p/c is still the OEM one. I'm not sure now. Maybe some other members could post some pictures of their saws both a 238se and a 242xp. I have not measured the bore of my saw yet.

Here is my 238se;

Looks like someone ported the 238 cylinder that was in the earlier pictures too Sir. Not a 242 like they stated :confused::dizzy:. Chainsaw still runs good for a 238 :clap:.

First of all, the 246 was not an xp!

Second, that orange plastic brake handle hardly is original on a 238SE - it most likely is from a 42.

Third, I hate to brake it to you and others, but those saws were just a tad lighter than the original 45cc 346xp, that replaced the 242xp - about .2 pounds.

Yes the chain brake has been replaced. I backed up the tractor to close to the saw inside the barn one time.
I have my numbers wrong too, 242xp not 246xp. I'll edit.

While Brad ported this 238se, he did not install the 242 p/c. That was done by my local dealer. Going to have a talk with him about this.

Well that's a bummer. If they make it right for you, send it back and I'll port the 242 topend for you, on the house.

If and when you do a real 242 cylinder and piston for Mr. Walker and put it on his 238. Would you make a thread on how you was able to do this please. Because I don't have enough know how to get a 242 to work on 238 :cry: .
With you owning two 242 Sir you would have thought you would have caught the differences in the cylinders :dizzy:. http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=91693&highlight=242 Nice offer to Mr. Walker to make it right :cheers:.

well i got another cylinder and the same problem so i don't know what to do but anyways i will just try and find a used cylinder that is good Later Troy

I don't think the 242 will just bolt on and work on the 238 Sir. I took some parts from a parts saw and tried it in the shop and the 238 wouldn't even turn over with a 242 top end on it. :cry::cheers: I could be doing something wrong.

So where are you running into trouble? I just tried tried a 242 and 246 cylinder on a 238 case. No problems, bolt pattern matches. Stroke of crankshaft is the same. If con rod is the same length all should interchange.

For me it is with the 242 piston installed and 242 cylinder installed on the 238 crankcase. Now try and pull it over and see what happens would you please Stihl Crazy. :clap:

Just a little piece of info that may or may not make a difference;

All 242s weren't the same - as the rated power was different between the early ones and the xp ones. I have no clue what made that difference though......:givebeer:

Here is what I get for measurements;

pin to crown
238-.507
242-.558

cyl base to head
238-2.20
242-2.35

238 con rod seems to be shorter but hard to measure as the 2 rods have different shoulder profiles.

Guess tonight I will swap pistons and try it myself.
