Dose changing the carb like “opening it up” harm the saw in any manor?

if you are refering to opening the muffler up.. you definitly need to adjust the saw out..jmo

I was just wondering; is there a chance of breaking or shortening the life of the saw by doing such modifications?

I do not have any personal experience with modified saws, but anyway.........
..........opening the muffler (within reason), and adjusting the carb accordingly is supposed to make the saw run both stronger and cooler according to many knowledgable people at this forum. Cooler running should lead to longer motor (cylinder/piston) life.
The saw is more than just the motor though, so enhanceing the motor power, without makeing the rest of the drive-line stronger, could at least in theory result in damage or excessive wear.
I dont think that is likely to happen with just a muffler modification, though.

Is there anything I can do to my 55? A cooler running saw during a Texas summer is a good thing

As I stated, I have no experience with muffler mods, and I am not in a position to give advice. Add to that, European Husky's does not have the same mufflers as the US versions.
I am sure that something can be done though.
What I would do initially is a search on muffler mod and the model number on Husky's of roughly the same power as the 55, ie 353 and 346.
When I had learned what I could from the archives, I would post the questions that were left.

Just for the record, there are some additional "benefits" that you should consider before performing a muffler mod:
-Voids any remaining warrancy
-More noise

you let dan do it ,an u saw will retain durability.. he works at leaving that in a saw ,when he mods.. daves on the other hand scared me.. but he had it set perfect.. saw took to 16000 rpm just fine..what i was surprised at was the torque at that setting..when a good modifier gets it rite.. leave it alone ,and mark your adjust settings..just depends on how much race saw they try an putin it. these guys that race saws can usually break it dn an get verything rite for the next competition.. jmo
