When you think you have seen some crazy devices, this must be the most for the price they are asking. A pair of these are going for the low low price of just $2,495.

Must come in handy for aerial rescues but for anything else the price is a bit out of my league.

I saw those on a TV program looking at German forestry. They used them to deadwood the pine stands and do seed collection. When I was in the USMC, they told us that we would face $2-3000 fines for gaffing up any trees in the forests when hanging communications wire.

Looks like climbing tree stands for your feet. With the same downfall. Only useful on pole like trees.

I suppose they could be useful on trees which are difficult or impossible to get a rope in, to achieve a tie in without spiking up the tree.

To me they look clunky and inefficient.....98% sure I'd never buy a pair, or even use them if they were free.

my grandfather sent me an add for this device made for the same purpose of dead wooding pines, at about the same price. Looks like an aluminum sail boat mast with the seat and pedals from a bike. Strap the pole to the tree and pedal yer way up 40 feet!

I would amagine they would be good for a few other things like pruning palms and picking fruit like coconuts, pineapples and bananas.

Amagine you can remove the straps to work past branches though so you can make it all the way up the tree.

Here's the pedal-type climber, a very ingenious device. It's a forestry thing where you need to do production limbing on stands of conifers for the purpose of creating quality, knot-free lumber in your woodlot. As well it is used to deadwood these lower reaches to eliminate the 'fire ladder'. It's fairly light (can be moved tree to tree by a single person) the gearing is low, making the vertical ascent easy and it leaves both hands free to use your saw, usually something Silky-like rather than motorized. I could see this of your job was to do palms, like hundreds of them a day. It's a production tool. http://futureforestry.com/forestry/products/ascender/ascender.html

The trunk walkers that opened the thread, I love seeing innovations in arboriculture and forestry, but using them for work, they're just not applicable for much beyond their intended use (straight, columnar trunks).
