026 air filters

I bought a 026 off eBay a couple of weeks ago. I have noticed that there are different air filters available for this saw.

I live in a dry climate and most of the wood I cut is very dry, hard oak.

I believe the filter that came with the saw is the flocked screen type.

Is there enough of a advantage to the other types that I would want to change?

Thanks

Not sure what "other" types you are referring to... The OLD type is "flocked" - basically fluff stuck to a screen. The newer type (many years now) have been "fleece". Fleece works better than flocked when dirty, and the fleece withstands cleaning better. if you get too aggressive cleaning flocked (like blowing hard with compressed air), you'll knock the flocking of the screen. If yours is in fact floceked, hold it up to the light and if you see mesh holes, dump it and buy a new one.

There is a very old filter that consisted of a fine stainless steel mesh. Hard to find, don't work well in fine dust conditions, but clean easily and last forever. In the Pacific NW these work great in the damp softwood conditions.

Would you like a "fine stainless steel mesh" older type filter ? I just replaced what I believe is the original from my 028 Super with a newer type, but the old one is in remarkable shape. No holes or rips to be found. Guess it would be a real nice thing for a guy that restores old saws, but I have no use for it. The Stihl dealer told me they replaced that older type so I bought a new one. Let me know if anyone has interest in it.

i always run a bead of grease around the edges to seal up these filters, they dont seal that well

^ if this is the same filter found on ms250s, (fits into a black rectangular plastic piece), i agree with you, i used to see dust inside the plastic thing when i took off the filter, i siliconed the filter to the plastic intake thing
