Hey guys; looking for some opinions....

From day one I have had nothing but praise for my Walkerized 026. It's just a great saw that has paid for itself over and again. However...also from day one it takes about eight pulls before it fires from a cold start. Once it fires, it runs awesome; and once it's hot, it fires on the first pull.

My guess is its a fuel issue, either choke or priming. I'm not defining it as a problem because its not that big a deal; but if I can get it to fire on the second or third pull like my other saws without tearing it down completely and risking screwing things up, it'd be nice to do.

Any thoughts?

I have a little 951 that was a two pull starter up until last week. I pulled the carb, cleaned and rebuilt it, cleaned out the pulse line, put it all back together, tuned it, and now it takes four pulls to start. I can richen up the low speed jet a touch, and it will start like it used to, but then it doesn't rev up right. I'm just going to live with the four pull cold start. Once it's hot, it starts with a short pull and runs like a raped ape. All other things considered, maybe eight pulls isn't such a bad thing. Some of the Stihl guys here should know.

What is your "starting procedure"?

It seems like each and every saw is just different enough, that they require their own process. :dizzy:

Pretty basic. Lock the throttle, push the lever down to the choke position, and start pulling. Around the eighth pull it fires, and if I get to it quick enough, I pull the lever up to the run position and off she goes. If I don't get to it in time, it stalls after the initial firing, but then it fires on the next pull.

When starting a stihl it is important to do all that the manual say, With Jonny you just pull, and go to work!! :p

My stihl saws ussually take around 8 pulls after they have been sitting for 3 or 4 weeks. I think it is about normal for a saw to take a minute or so considering it has sit their for a wile and it doesnot have a primer bulb on it. Considering my first saw that was a poulan wildthing that took 50 to 75 pulls to start. I don't mind 7 or 8 pulls.

I dont mind 7-8 pulls to start a saw. hell I ran a wildthign too, till it decided to get under the sledghammer I was swingin one day.

Now the 024 seems to be MUCH better about starting, considering its a good saw to start with.

oh my god a wildthing who went suicidal ,,,, what a loss to sawkind ,,,, :dizzy:

Yes I did the first chainsaw I had ever used got it out of the box put mix and bar oil in it and pulled on it 75 times to start it I pulled about 50 and my dad pulled about 25 times. Once you got it running it would stay running and it would start warm after the 2 or 3rd pull. After that it usually started 30 to 35 pulls cold. I hated that saw with passion I cut about 25 cords of wood with it and the oiler went out so I took it back to walmart and they gave me a refund in full and I went to the stihl dealer and bought a ms 290 that was a good saw.

the biggest change in my starting procedure ius pulling too hard an fast. if shes ready. just a light pull to make it turn over a couple o times an they crank. the first crank aftrer a saw sets a spell can take longer sometimes. but i dont pull hard as when shes ready it ll crank.
one think i wont put up with on my saws [olympic, stihl husk an echo] is a saw that dont crank first pull after shes been running.

When I owned a couple 026's I always ran the fuel out because the saws were stored in my basement. Once the saw was to be used again it took 20-22 pulls to get it started. I chatted wtith a Stihl rep named Ben Crago about this he stated that since the choke was inside the filter a good seal was sometimes hard to get and that explained why the saw required more pulls.

Say what,20 to 25 times, and 50 to 75 times, good heavens. Are these the same good folks that poke fun at the old Macs and Homies?Geeze even my 40 year old antiques only take about 6 to 8 after setting 4 months,on a cold start.Normally one or two on a hot start. If it makes you feel better,my 4 Stihls take 4 to 6 ,cold.

Thanks for your insight, guys. Like I said, I don't want to mess up an otherwise stellar saw. Both my 6401 and Echo 3450 start after 2-3 pulls. Like an old shop mechanic used to tell me about the ladder truck I worked off of, "It's just characteristic of the piece."
