got any pictures of the puller? Just got mine in the mail.

This is one for the dealer. The 026 is a great saw but the seals can be pain without the Stihl puller, and its expensive for using now and then. We do that job here for around 50 Bucks, parts and labor. And yes put em both in !

read the other posts in the thread. this was my first time out and i had no problems. dealer my ***. :monkey:

i think my seal install went o.k.

first, everything clean as a wistle.
next, wrapped the crankshaft with electrical tape to protect the seal from the flywheel keyway, being sure that the tape was high enough to be removed after the seal was installed!!!
next, greased the seal lips.
then, applied a thin smear of rtv to the outside of the seal.

placed seal on crank, and approriate sized socket over shaft. push seal down untill it started in the case. tapped it down in to the case slowly with the socket untill i achieved 1mm below the case edge. checked my 1mm with mic until i got it right ;).

lakeside53 once cautioned that if you don't have the stihl installation sleeve on the crankshaft that when you traverse the 'step' in the shaft that you could lose the seal spring. i have no idea if i lost it or not. the case held vacuum after the install, so i am hoping for the best.:)

I got mine on the desk next to me, was wondering how much you filed it down?

oh.

well, i have since broken the tip i ground down.
no the fault of the tool... i had modded it further for a different seal and i went way too skinny.

all i did to mod it originally was narrow it untill it would flip in and under the seal. after that i had to make the hook reach shallower so that tool would flip verticle.

it was a matter of simply trying it, narrowing it, trying it, narrowing it, grinding the reach, trying it. really about that fast. as long as you don't force things while trying it and bugger up the crankshaft it's all good. :)

026 seal

I got my Lysle puller this week.I`m proud to say that I was able to pop my clutch side seal out very easily.I`m waiting for the 026 flywheel puller and the seal kit.I fallowed the advice I`ve been reading and it came out very easily.I know the flywheel side is the hard one, but am confident I can do it.I think the two hook tips are the same size in the puller kit.I do wish someone would post a picture of the modified tip for the 026 seal.

Seal Removal

I've had pretty decent luck on those drilling a small hole (or two- on opposite sides) in the metal part of the seal and using sheet metal screws to get them out.

That'll learn yah to put a saw together without checking the seals...

I replaced the seals on my 024 Super awhile ago. I drilled a 3/16 hole on one side of each seal.{the bearings are hardened, so if you are careful, you will not damage them}. Tapped in seal lightly opposite the drilled hole, inserted a Snap On right angle pick into hole, pulled out both seals easily. Installing the crank seal, I used a piece of 1/2 inch plastic water pipe, cut to length, for a driver{perfect fit}, and a deep well socket on the clutch side. Worked good for me! VT. Woodchuck

Just opened mine up, they are the same. One is a bit more round but the same.

Why are you guys buying automotive seal pullers to use on a chainsaw, :monkey::monkey::monkey:

Mr.Thall send me one of these fancy gold plated pullers for free, and I will destroy the lisle puller with a homelite.

Sounds like a win win to me.
