Brought home the 028 this evening from the neighbors tonight. Hasn't been run in a couple of years. The fellow died a couple years ago but used it cut a lot of wood. I saw it sitting in the corner of the shed and told his son I should take it home and clean it up for him. He told to take it and keep it! Needs a complete cleanup but I know it was used until shortly before his death. My main question is how will this saw compare to my 346? It seemed a little heavier but had a 20 inch bar. I'm going to use this saw as a learning saw. Never really took one apart before. I'm thinking new fuel line, filters and spark plug. Think I will also put a 16 inch bar and some rsc chain on it. Any other things that should be checked out? Thanks for the help.

028

farmermike,
I cannot answer your question about the 346, but I can give you an answer on the 028.From what I have read this saw was one of the best saw that Stihl had ever produced.I bought mine in 1985 new.It has never failed me and sits in my garage today. This saw is reliable as death and taxes.Mine has been under water, used to cut ice off a roof, and had the bar run over buy a tractor.I am most certain that other will chime in on other brands but this piece will serve you well.I did a compression check on mine a short time ago. 168lbs. I use a quality synthetic oil (AMSOIL) and the saw loves it along with premiun gas.Get it going and use the 16 inch bar.20 is pushing it in my opinion for this saw.It has responded well to a muffler mod.Take care of it and it will take care of you. Enjoy your saw as the past owner may be watching, Ken

Which version of the 028 is it, they were sold with several different engine sizes (43, 47 and 51.5cc)........

As for weight, the 028s are about 2 lbs heavier than the 346xp (empty powerhead weight).

And it will lack the anti-vibe and filtration of 346xp...

Sure it will.....

The power rating of the 51.5cc (Super) version is the same as the 346xp, but I am sure the running characteristics will be quite different (less speed, but more low-end torque, I believe).

well, hasnt that always been the same with stihl vs. husky, low-speed tq vs. high rpm...

I think "AV" in 028AV Super means Anti-Vibration (rubber mounts).

Hey FarmerMike,
I don't know about 346xp but 028AV Super is very easy to work on as I just finished replacing piston/rings, carb kit, and muffler mod. Your saw is the 46mm dome top piston which is the 3.4hp (most powerful of the 028 models). Also all the rubber hoses and filters 6 months ago. This was my first saw and like you, it was a learner saw. Parts were pretty cheap and easy to get. Only thing I haven't done is split the crank case and hopefully, I never have to. It screams now and love the 16" bar. Good luck,

Youre right on that AV model marking, but still, its nowhere near huskies anti-vibe...

Ooooppps, you said AV Super, so it is the 51.5cc one.

Thanks for all the replies. What is involved with a carb kit. Is it just replacing the needle valves and gaskets? I don't even know if they have needle valves. Thinking of whats involved in a carb kit for a briggs engine. Anyways, it's going to be a while, just started doing spring field work today. Probably gonna be a winter project for me. I've got alot of ash to cut and split this summer. Probably in the neighborhood of 15 cords. That and with my full time job in town and farming my summer is pretty much used up:dizzy: . I'm gonna drain all the gas and spray some oil in the carb and jug to keep it from locking up and stick it on the shelf. I've also got an old bradley and indian to work on next winter as well. To think six months ago all I had was an old worn out 029:greenchainsaw: ! Now I have six saw and they seem to be multipling.
