I just thought I would update with some pics of said saw. It runs out nice. I havent put it in any wood yet, but i think she will be a runner. I did mod it a little with a muffler mod and I milled the cylinder to get a .025 squish. Comp was 145 psi before I touched it. I will check it again after some run time.

I have used an 028 WB (smaller displacement) that has great torque, really cool sound, and is just a joy to use, in somewhat the same way the 044 just "feels right" when using it. This is not a function of spec numbers. The 028 will use more fuel, and be a bit heavier, but they are really cool saws. four AV mounts instead of three, a double length clutch drum bearing, a GREAT way to hook up the throttle linkage. 026s are a common as cat crap, I have two for sale that run good. The 028 might need seals, and the pistons are pricey new.
But it is a piece of relatively recent history that cuts great and is a blast to use.
A runner for one bill is a deal, IMO.

Oops, looks like you already got it. Way to go. Look for the boot on ebay, try cheap saw parts or curt's or just hit search and it will come up.

Well, two tanks thru her and I like it. Comp is up to 160. I still might take the jug down some more, down around .018 to .020. I bought a loop of Stihl Full comp for it an it pulls the 18" bar good in some hard oak I had laying around. So far so good. Now the next question......to port or not to port?

I would not port. The cylinders are out there, but arent cheap and as plentiful as they used to be. If you ruin the jug, good bit of $$$ for a replacement. I have been looking for an 028 Super cylinder for a while and no luck. Everyone wants to sell the P/C combo, and I aint springing for an OEM cylinder.

i try not to port my saws but ive hogged open everything ive cracked open.

359 044 372 and 084. so far everything that hasnt been ported hhasnt needed to be tore down. these include the 026 and 034 i dont have plans to port either.

but i did just get a new grinder and new carbide burrs so who knows

That much $$ huh? I am happy with the power it has now, but you know how this modding thing goes, trying to squeeze the last ounce of power out of it. Anybody ever port an 028 super?

I know what you mean. I have never done any port work to a 28 super. I just lowered the jug on mine and muffler modded it. it runs very well, I dont think it needs more power to prove itself.

The 028 AV Quick Stop I have is 43 cc. ,2.8 hp and 11.5 lbs powerhead only.
They are a slower torquey engine but once ported and muffler modded they come alive.
The 028 Super I have is 51.5 cc, 3.3 hp and 12.3 lbs powerhead only. It is faster and more powerful than the 028 AV and also benifits from porting and muffler modding.
The 026`s I have is 48.7 cc., 3.5 hp, 10.4 lbs powerhead , they are faster revving saws, don`t have the torque of the 028`s but can make up with cutting speed in small stuff, they also respond well to porting and muffler modding, the MS260`s are basically the same as a 026 but have the intella carb and a bit better air filter, need the carb replaced if ported and muffler modded.
I prefer the 026 and MS260 for smaller wood and limbing trees once brought down by a bigger felling saw.
The 028`s are better suited as bucking saws for smaller firewood but do an ok job of felling smaller trees in the 6-12" on the stump. IMO

Well, 15 years after this thread was started, I finally picked up an old 026. I’m not sure I agree with peoples opinion on the 028/026 debate. The 026 is a Pro series saw. I have finally ported and muffler modded it. -And wow.
It’s a tremendous saw. Out performs a 028 Super any day of the week. The fact that it’s significantly lighter, make this hands down the winner.
I may just sell my 261c m-tronic now that this saw is running well.
