Ok guys I'm sure I'll hear about it because I have one and I know how alot of you dislike them but I bought it for my girlfriend about 2 years ago, well anyway she was out cutting cordwood with it yesterday and she told me it did'nt look like it was putting out very much oil so I started it up and held it over a red oak log and held the throttle wide open for about 30 sec and sure enough it does'nt look like it's pumping any oil so I tried to adjust it with the screw but it did'nt seem to make a difference.

So my question is what could be wrong with it and how do I fix the problem??Hopefully someone can help me out..

Of course I did I know the usual stuff to look for I'm pretty sure it's internal something in the pump itself.

I've never done one on the 029 but I've done other Stihls. They all have similarities.
I first find out where the blockage is. As mentioned, I check the outlet hole by the bar mount first. If I have no flow with the bar off, I have 3 places to check.
1- The pickup in the tank and tube to the pump
2- The pump (under the sprocket and clutch)
3- The tube from the pump to the bar

Once you pull the pump out (a couple screws) you can check/clear both tubes with compressed air. The pump is usually sealed, so I just clean them up the best I can and mess with them until I can get oil pumping through.

The 029 got a bastard plastic worm gear. I have replaced quite a few now that it has gotten cold.

Steps I would do-
  • First I would take the bar off, run it and see if its coming out there, if not procede with next step
  • Now I would drain the bar oil out for the most part and pull the pickup assemble off, blow it out good and put it back on and run it, nothing again, move on.
  • Check the hose running from the tank to the oiler, runs under the black handle part I think.
  • Take the sprocket cover off, sprocket, clutch, and washer.
  • Pull the worm off and check it, should have a funny looking wire on it.
  • Remove the pump, Take apart what I can and clean it out good.
  • Blow out both the hoses, one too the pump and one to the bar.
  • Re-assemble, making sure to get that funny looking wire lined up with the notch in the clutch drum.
  • Put in bar oil and see if it works. '
  • If it still doesn't work I get pissed and order a new oiler or maybe take it back apart and start over from step 1.

When I get to this point I find that a few whacks with a large ball peen (or maybe even a 6 lb sledge) works wonders. Then I get in my truck and drive to the dealer where I buy a new saw.

Well I just got the bar off but it's time for lunch I try it afterwards and let you know what happens..Thanks for the pointers guys.

Rob,

Did some searching and see you have had this problem in the past.

My MS290 has NEVER put out adequate oil flow(maxed out),purchased new with 20" bar.I've since fitted it with a 16" bar which is better matched to the oiler volume from my 290.Cold weather is a critical factor when a saw does not oil well to begin with.

My dealer said the saw was fine,it oils(BS).

I have 3 Stihls and 1 Husky, the 290 is the only saw that does not oil adequately or has ever been a problem.

Do your girlfriend a favor,get her a 357xp

:blob2:

Before getting too involved into it, rinse out the tank with mineral
spirits or gas a few times, the fill it again and run the saw with the
bar off, sometimes this cures clogs without surgery.

Hey ricksavr I already did get a 357XPG but I'm keeping it for myself...Either way I still need to fix the 029S.

Fish thanks for the info maybe I will try that first.

Well thanks for all the tips I just got done fixin' it and made a few cuts out in my woodpile seems to be ok now,it was something clogging the pickup line so I took it off and blew it out with my air compressor and so far so good thanks again..

I would sell it but other than that oil problem the saw has been good to me for the past 2 years, plus I don't want to have her using my 357XPG :D
