I've never owned an 041, but in looking at them they seem to be built differently from the newer Stihls. For example, they seem to be laid out much like a Homelite XL-12 with the side muffler rather than the newer design of the muffler up front. For those of you who know the technical and mechanical data a lot better than I, is the XL-12 comparison accurate?

XL-12 has reed valve(s), farmboss is piston ported. Farmboss is not very forgiving of even the slightest piston scuffing. The XL-12 will run with something that looks like it fell out of orbit for a piston.

The 041 was weird because she got the intake and exhaust on same side of the cylinder, one below the other. Was a good saw,but if remember correctly the starter bolts were always loose, didnt have Loctite in those years.

Most of the old saws had horizontal cylinders, which put the exhaust at the right rear of the saw. Emission specs put an end to that arrangement. Now the jug is on top, which dictates mufflers be on the front.
