I agree, it does look like the KS has a smaller combustion chamber. Other than that, they appear to look pretty close....

Hmmmmmm.......

This saw is 100% stock, with a dual port muffler and will flat out put a hurt on a stock 372. It ain't even a contest...

is this a 12mm saw ? has same markings as one i have off ,my 115 11 ++ is a 10mm that is on the saw in my pics

I have an angled fin 044 Mahle cylinder. Is there a definitive way to tell if it's a 10mm jug? Are the angled 10mm and 12mm jugs the same, just with different pistons? Or are the completely different? Thanks

This thread is sure some good reading material. I never knew there were sooo many different 044 cylinders. A person sure does learn something new everyday. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread and to all that have contributed with their insightful knowledge!

I have the same query.

KS jugs were first. Mahle is a later cylinder probably from a mid to late run 044.

So the KS jugs were first, and they were 10mm. Then Mahle made some 10mm jugs? Then they switched over to 12mm, but still had angled fins on top for a while? This is so confusing!!:dizzy:

I guess I'm wondering if there's any way to tell between the 10mm and 12mm jugs with the angled fins on top? Also wondering if there is any difference in performance, or if the piston is the only thing that changed at that time? Thanks!

Yep confusing. No way to tell really about what the jug came from without the saw for serial number.

So much variability in these 1128 and 1121 models. You guys that like to play, tell me this, do other brands have this much variability present or is this kind of a Stihl tradition?

I'd like to know if there is much difference between the Mahle 10 mm 044 jug and the later 440 jugs with compression release. It looks pretty clear that the Kolbenschmidt one will yield higher compression and more fuel-air mixture through it than the Mahle. I wonder why they changed to the less open design of the Mahle.

and this one on the saw ,i know is an early 10mm 044 ,crank, flywheel, cylinder and piston were robbed from an early 044 and put in a 440 chassis ,this is a real good running saw for being bone stock ,lot of tourque

Just about to clean up one of these. Came off an early 044 (123209794, West Germany 1989). Here's some pics:

whatever ks means ,that one sure runs good that is on the saw

the one off on the right stamped mahle on bottom ,has a meteor piston next to it ,i had that an another 440 chassis ,it ran pretty strong ,but different than the full 10mm one that is together ,the 12mm saw has a mahle 046 jug on it now ,it is stronger yet with that one
Those are by far the best. I missed a new NOS one like that from an ebay seller for $250. They have more aggressive porting, and teh compression area at the top is smaller than the Mahle, or so I believe. There might be several variants of the K$ one, but I'm not surprised it's the torquiest one of all. I have a NOS K$ cylinder for my 064, which I would put on in a heartbeat if the saw didn't run so strong as is stock. It's a later one with the plastic AF housing, so I know it's not a K$ on there.

I hope you keep that cylinder in good shape for a long time, that cylinder is a true treasure.
