I am planning to buy a Wallenstein winch in-feed processor, to feed my outdoor wood boiler, and to sell a little bit of firewood. The processor has a pivoting chainsaw holder, I put a picture in the post showing what it looks like.

I am trying to decide which of my saws to use as the dedicated processor saw. My two bigger saws after a couple 036s are an 044 10mm slant and an 064. Whichever saw gets put on the processor will definitely get the most run time and wear. I am leaning towards 064 as it is bigger, may not wear out as fast. On the other hand I know parts are becoming an issue.

Looking for some advice and opinions.

The bigger saw would be what you want.

Well, it's definitely getting harder to find 064 cases, covers, coils, oil pumps, etc. They are getting up there in value as well. The beauty of those old saws was their power to weight ratio and asthetics. Those things are no benefit to a processor machine. But that is just my personal logic.

Who cares if he's selling wood and saving money on heat with the machine, what you save you can buy any saw you want in just one season.

They are just chainsaws, just machines designed to be used, keep one if one wants to bad enough but there are hundreds if not thousands out there still running well enough to do daily duty. Not every one needs to be saved, if one gets close to worn out then rebuid it and shelf display it. Don`t tell me they are so rare that parts cannot be found for them, I have rebuilt saws from the 1950`s through the 60`s with NOS parts, maybe rare but not impossible to find.

Not like its mint !

Unless it is a NIB then it is just a used chainsaw. If it does not have sentimental value to one then its just another chainsaw designed to cut wood, I built an 064 mostly from NOS parts and I still run it cutting larger wood sometimes with a 36" bar but more often a 32. I have three 066 saws that I don`t hesitate to cut up anything that comes my way, just used chainsaws no mint ones here.

I understand where you're coming from. I definitely don't think they're exotic vintage saws by any means, but I just have a soft spot for the 064 and the 10mm 044. I agree, they are just saws at the end of the day.

I know that they are just saws but.... I'd keep them off the machine and maybe improve them a bit. They don't make em like that anymore. And never will again.
I read comments that there are plenty about but that is not the case over here. I've been looking for a 10mm 044 for years

They are definitely not mint condition, they are not trashed, but good honest work saws. I bought them because I appreciate and respect the older saws, I don't care to trash them, but they are tools that I use for firewood. I'm not too eager to buy another saw and shelve these, otherwise they just become collector's pieces.

I can get behind this. Purchased a new wood stove and 462 when I bought my house in 2021 for about 7k total cost and I have already saved more than that. No point in being cheap if you want to save/make money

What size of log can your processor take? What species of tree are you likely to be cutting? Can you file and or grind chains to keep them at optimum?
Bigger engine saw will do what a smaller engine saw can do, but the smaller can never fully do what the larger saw can do- plus it is bolted to a frame, so no need to worry about and power to weight or carry weight arguments.
If it were me and I was in a permanent yard bringing logs to the processor- I would be running an electric saw, but given your choices currently I would be using the 064, then if need must or the logs are small enough to warrant it, the 044 as a second choice.
At the end of the day they are tools, tools wear out through use, but they are designed to be used not polished and looked at.
If we all go into a panic about preserving older saws and not using them for fear of not being able to buy a new part at the dealers on any given day you choose to walk in and ask for it- the World will be full of spit polished older saws with no collector value because they are not rare.

Use what you have, maintain it and take care of it as you do now and it will process many tonnes of firewood for you.

Well, if you got them and they are usable, go for it. If down time is an issue, go for a new saw. You WILL need repairs due to the age of the saw.
Before you start, give them a good diagnostic look over. These saws have a lot of years on them. With some pre-emptive maintenance, down time will be a minimum .
Fuel and pulse hoses, intake boot, crank seals and bearings (especially the clutch side).
And start sourcing a module for the 064.
