I have an older 046, not sure if it is a magnum or not. When I got it it had no muffler cap but there is not anything inside of their anyway. I just recently realized that that was strange. All this talk about modding mufflers, well my muffler is dead bare. It has a spark arrestor screen and that is it. I have a maxflow air filter on it and a big bore kit and it runs just great, so I guess I dont have anything to worry about. When me and my brother were cutting side by side my 046 completly drowned out his non epa mac 610. That was when I realized it truely was loud as He#%. Is there supposed to be anything in there? just wonderin.

Justin, your muffler is horribly wrong, and may destroy your saw.
What you need to do is to remove it, ship it to me, and out of the goodness in my heart, I will ship you a new fully restricted muffler for your saw at no charge.

You are so kind must be that Christmas spirit in you ,,, am i right or am i right :D

Another thing you might do is take off the cap and run your finger around where the cylinder, gasket and muffler meet. feel for any high spots and ridges as well as carbon that may be impeding exhaust flow. Then remove the muffler and grind off any material so as to have unrestricted flow including the gasket and cyl. Mark the gasket for proper placement after enlargening.
This will obviously improve flow, reduce heat and increase POWER!! :blob2:
I give credit to Dennis Cahoon for this neat little trick.

Thanks for the replies I did not think anything was supposed to be in there, but in my parts book it showed a muffler with all kinds of crap in it. I've been meaning to get into the muffler so I will have to check that out. I haven' been in there since I rebuilt the saw.
