So I'm going to rebuild my first saw but have a question about the corrosion in the crankcase if it's too thin to hold up or should I get a new half? I did apply qbond to try an thicken but just don't want to waste good parts if it's gonna fail anyway. Thanks for any help.

An the rot is right on the bottom it doesn't go all the way through but gets close at a small area right there about the middle of the bottom of wer the crankshaft would be

Looks like someone has already tried to fix the rot before and the fix is starting to unbond from the continuing mag rot.

Some serious cleaning and prep to see just how far the damage has gone before going further.

You can still get the OEM crankcase for the 046/460, not too expensive compared to Husky. Just ordered one myself.

You can get a 440 bottom end for 150. Toss the 46 top on it and cut wood with a nearly new saw.
Youl also need the 440 handle and top plastic.
Your Basically only using the 46 cylinder and piston.

You could probly do this for under 300 I havent checked prices latly

If you already have a 440 thats an upgrade, but if you already have a 046/460 thats not it.

Looks fiberglassed...
How does the rest of the saw look?
Its not bad just a second hand saw that was put to use but then at the end of it's life must have been neglected considering the rot. Since I'm not being told it's garbage I think I'ma sand off watevr was used in the attempt to fix, an since it's not rotted all the way through the case maybe a descent but not too thick glob of JB weld under the spot on the outside of the case to sorta make a patch to give it strength will do the trick

It's not all the way through I did end up sanding it off it's just close but still pretty solid maybe something outside the case to reinforce it

yeah, hopefully when you remove the fiberglass, it dosent take too much parent material away.
Surface prep is key for this, so make sure you get all of the old epoxy out.
Once its all removed, degreaser, and acetone one after the other with the case half in the sun, or hot, so it sweats out the oil in the porus mag.

yes, I would think some jb on the inside of the case to build it up on a well prepared surface would be fine from the inside, and once cured, cover any rot on the outside of the case as well.
You could make a dam out of masking tape where the gasket surface is so it builds up there, and then file flat once cured along the gasket surface.

If surface prep is good, it will last a very long time, even inside the case like that.

Keep posting pics.

when i did a case repair with jb, I took lots of time on using solvent to degrease, and then follow up with acetone, then more solvent, heat etc so the surface was very dry and no more oil sweated out, thats probably the most important bit in the repair.

Thanks ....wen I was sanding the remainder I was able to chip off wat was left, so I didn't have to get into the mag other then to prep the surface. I have access to a Ryobi electric pressure washer (not nearly as much pressure as gas) so as to not damage the case half. Also I can have scalding hot water goin through the pressure washer. So I've scrubbed with dawn dish soap I'll have to get some acetone thats a good idea....is mineral spirits a good cleaner I do have some of that.. lastly that's wat I was originally wanting to do is apply JB on the inside so thanks for clarifying that I can, I just have to thoroughly prep. I was really bummed out thinking I had to wait til I got the money to get another case q

Mineral spirits is good for dissolving any oil/grease/gas residue. Do it twice until clear. Then use acetone to remove any residue from the mineral spirits. Good idea on gently heating it to degas the metal.

Be careful with the hot water, it may damage your pressure washer seals.
